Can't connect my scanner anymore

Hi guys,

I've just reinstalled windows XP with a genuine copy of windows (I got fed up of the validation checks), everything works fine except for my scanner, which when turned on does not get detected. I have uninstalled, then reinstalled the scanner drivers (it's a HP scanner), to no avail. When i switch the leads from to scanner to the printer, it detects the printer right away, and it does not matter which usb port I plug the scanner into, it still won't work.
The scanner worked fine right up until the reinstall. My friend say's that I should have disconnected the scanner before I reinstalled the PC, which I admit I never did, nor the printer, but that works fine.

If it's a USB scanner first uninstall the software from the ad/remove menu.
Open device manager by holding down the windows key (one to the left and right of the space bar) and then tap the 'pause/break' key (should be above the 'page up' key) choose hardware and look for your scanner, then remove it from the system, if it's not there go on to next step. Then physically remove the scanner by taking out the usb cable (computer or scanner end it doesn't matter)
Reboot and install from cd but don't connect scanner until prompted.

I've downloaded the new driver from hp, but thats not made any difference, the scanner is a HP scanjet 5400c, I'll try the device manager thing tonight, and let you know how I get on.
