Trying to clear up my 15 year old Son's computer, but have found 55 virus on it, even thouigh it has NAV

I have run a scan, found 55, deleted the lot, but only removed 5, the others say delete failed

Can any one help

Gary.

Then try a google search on each virus name for deletion methods.

Don't forget to dump NAV (pronounced naff) :D

AVG ...2 of us then...it's unanimous:-

Hmm - I have found NAV okay but avg may be better (esp if free :) ) - were they all viruses or are some spyware alerts? If you see the virus name the Symantec website has a set of deletion tools to help.... try here and here

Secondly, the inbuilt virus removals are much more effective if you run the virus scanner in Safe mode - to do this keep tapping the F8 key as it boots - this is becuase if a file has been loaded into memory, the software can't normally remove it. Safe mode reduces the amount of rubbish loaded up at start-up.

Hope this helps some.

If NAV installed then it is a shame you had so many viruses - is the autoprotect option turned on?

Cheers,

Mark

I work in the AV software industry, so if you can give me some details of what was detected and the location I should be able to help,

Meanwhile some handy tips for scanning:

Run your scan in Safe Mode (F8) if your AV will support it. Delete you temp internet files and contents of the %TEMP% and TEMP folders first as this will save time an dget rid of a lot of dross, malware is often found in the system restore folder and some AV software will not remove it , so turn it off, restart and turn it back on and the nasties are gone (as are your last restore points!)

Have a look in Add/remove programs and uninstall anything you do not recognise, you can also use MSCONFIG as an alternative to delving in the registry and this is a good way of stopping any auto-starts used by the malware.

Finally never open email attachments from someone you do not know or are not expecting something from, delete the mail instead, close the preview pane if you use one as many explits use this as a mechanism for launching malware, and remember, Micorosoft does not send out emails to mortals like us!

PM if you need to know more, I have a generic cleaning paper I wrote a while ago that covers this and loads more if you need it

Cheers

Out of interest. Internet Messaging is now the a contender for the most common source of virii and worms. Along with dodgy web pages many AV programs simply will not pick up on code that initiates request packets. To protect your PC you really need in addition to AV a logical proxy that can inspect the application layer in IP transmissions. An excellent package for this is Surf Control which does stateful packet inspection in both directions. Certainly if not this, then at least a combo unit of AV and Internet firewall.

The current MSN exploit has not been seen so much in the UK as Europe and the USA (maybe we really are still in Dark Ages!) It is interesting in that the user receives a link to a web site: (munged)

http://home.xxxxx.net/~gallery10/omg.pif omg.pif

That when launched downloads a worm that messages everyone in the local MSN address book as a means of replication, and downloads a little bot, The best cure is block the MSN port (1863?) a good Gateway content package is a bonus especially if it allows additional AV engines to be called, filters data streams and supports black listing.

Of course you could always use aMSN and forget about 99.99% of all known exploits.
