I've had sports bikes and 1150 GSA now have Ktm 950 sm its the best compromise I could have made until They bring out a 1200 GS that is light,nimble and reliable. Don't knock it till you try it

It's not any slower on real roads than the 1000, I believe - but has far more torque than the 600......... all in the same(ish) package. Same weight etc.

Surprisingly - the only Jap to offer that size

I've got a K6 GSXR 1000 and a 2007 1200GS. They play to different parts of your personality and I think you need to decide which bit of your personality has got the upper hand. Closet hooligan, reluctant law abider, speed freak= GSXR. Fabulous bike, exhilarating to ride. Adventurer, explorer, multi situation riding, touring and town riding= GS. Ideal have both. If only one an option in the real world GS every time.But if you can live a little have both.

I think the answer is to really reflect on what you want from your riding, don't kid your self and realistically separate reality riding form fantasy riding and you will get your answer.

Gixer demons

Hi, like you i've just signed up to the site looking to buy a 1200GS

I have a gixer thou k4 ltd edition, black & gold, i think it's the ultimate bike but on the road it just keeps wispering to me, just a little more throttle, brake later, push it harder into the next bend and me being week i listen to the voices !!!!!
so my quiet ride turns into 150+ chassing rossi madness, now like you im getting older and i know that i can only get away with it for so long but the gixer does it too easy and still wants more, the police dont seem to understand my demons and just want me banned (again) !!!
so the gixer has been locked away for my own sanity/licence/job, i took out an 08 1200 adventure on the worst day possiible, torrential rain freezing temps & then a hailstorm, it took a few miles to figure out the gs but after that i had the best ride i've had in a long time, the fastest i went was 90 and that was just once.
I think ive found the answer to my demons, a bike that can give so much confidence and fun on a test ride in the worst conditions is just what im looking for, no more mental speeds and paranoia scaning for the next speed cop.
I would love to keep the gixer and just use it on the track but i know what will happen, i'll get on the GS and ride it everywhere and the gixer will just collect dust in the workshop, so the gixer is for sale.
My mind has been made up, just have to find the 12.5k to get the adventure

Of course if you want to keep the GXer and don't have anywhere to store it, you can always leave it round mine - just leave the spare keys, just so i can keep the battery charged of course......

I love the gixer

but i cant afford to have both at this time, maybe down the line i will get another RGV250 and just ring its neck on the track.
If i can have so much fun on a test ride and still get my fix then i think a GS will be for me, it fits all roles giving me my fun and taking the the gf off for the weekend, who knows i may be able to tempt her to go further and make it a week or two in a distant land

I've gone and done it

Ok, so I read all the comments and was surprised by the number of people saying to keep the gixer. However, I've ignored them all, put the bike up for sale and put a deposit down on a R1200GS in blue which arrives in a couple of weeks at Barnstormer.
I went out on the Gixer a couple of times recently and due to the amount of police around on the A32 and A272 I didnt enjoy the rides. Apparently they even had a hidden spotter on a hill flagging riders to cops further up the road.
The whole reason for having the bike was to chill out at the weekend and de-stress so it has to go.
However, I do have a session at Donnington at the Ron Halsmam school on a Fireblade booked in May and I intend to do some track days on rented bikes to satisfy the nutter in me.

Next thing to do is plan a weekend trip to France, if anyone is interested.

I really look forward to taking each kind of bike out - but can't wait for the better weather to take the R-1 away for a couple of nights, riding great roads, with just a tailpack fitted.

Not as barking as i thought then ,,, nice to know ...
Sooooooo glad to hear that so many of us have got more than one bike..
Also new to the GS world of wonder, got an 1150 gsa se, bought recently and loving every yard i travel upon it .. Alongside it in the garage is a '52 plate Hyabusa.. About the only things they have in common is both have two wheels and are as ugly as a bag of spanners.. If i had to decide which has the bigger "grin factor" i'd be stuffed.. Must admit that since i got the GS the 'busa hasnt seen daylight.. I took the cowards way out ,, kept them both, makes sense to me at least,lol.. Only down side as far as i can see is the garage is a bit cramped,,, ho hum, shit happens eh ,lol.. E Bike puts the GS on my insurance for about £50 extra, and few squids more in road tax ,and all's well with the world ,lol...
Needless to say ,,i'd go with the many whom suggest the keeping of both bikes,, works for me ,, happy riding mate , let the good times roll..

I can relate to people's dilemmas from giving up on the sports bike and comin over to a totally different ride, I did just that when I gave up my lovely brand new to me R6 last yr (pictured below). I do still miss it on the rare occasion but it was totally wasted over here, bad roads and so so many speed restricted ones. Love what I have now, this is my biggest challenge yet and as far as I am aware I am the only lady on the iow riding about on an 1150gs, its cool being unique whereas with the sports over here every man and his dog has one. However, if I were rich I would probably have another as my toy

Bought the 1150GS about 2 years ago to do two up touring and kept my SV1000 for sunny days. Its fair to say that the SV has barely been out of the garage since. Sad really cos I love riding it.

Thinking about getting an enduro bike to get some practice in before I do Enduro Africa in November, so the SV will get even less use.
Any one want a mint 03 SV1000S????

I suppose the answer to the original question is to keep both if you have the space and can afford it, but be realistic and if you are not using it, are you starting museum?
