I've googled to the point of confusion and had this issue for a a long time on my laptop.

If someone sends me a gpx I can't open it or even save it, gdp is fine.

Normally this is ok but I've been making a detailed route using Google Earth and got as far as saving it as a KML file and using GPvisuliser have converted it to gpx BUT the same old problem is there when I try and download the file.

I seem to have 7 Zip as a default opener when I click the gpx and that won't open it.

WTF? Do I need to install ummm Win Zip ?

What do you want to open the gpx file in? Right click the file and click open with. You then choose whatever program you have that opens them. If you check the box that say always open with this, you will be able to just double click the file from then on.

Right clicking doesn't give an option what to open with, I'm pretty it's something to do with this program 7 Zip, all gpx files I do have, have that logo but can't open them.

7 zip is for opening zip files/archives. Gpx files will open in notepad it's just basically a text file but that isn't going to do you much good as it's just a load on long lat way points. What do you have on your machine that needs the gpx files, why did you convert to this format?

GPX are often used for tracklogs etc with Mapsource/Basecamp, I haven't converted any, those I have are from other people. That's no real problem if I can get them in GDP.

The immediate problem is as I said above in wanting to convert from Google earth (KLM) to GPX I get so far but am stuck once converted.

I know what they are for I am just trying to work out what you want to open them with so I can help you set it as default. Like I said you can open them in notepad. If that doesn't show in the open with you need to click more and go find notepad.exe. I suspect though that you will be wanting some software that actually visualises the way points on a map.
As I said 7 zip is completely the wrong software hence the error.

go to your gpx file right click and go to properties. under general tab you will see change, left click change and browse to the programe you want to use to open it. if for example you are using windows 7 and tyre, it will be under C programe files86. tyre. tyre exe.

Yes, I understand now thanks:beerjug:

Yep, I downloaded Tyre and opened it with that then saved as a Garmin gpx, opened in Mapsource then saved as GDP.

It works!!!! Thanks very much :thumb

Ah it seems you can send the new gpx file straight from Tyre to the GPS.

It's funny I've been aware of Tyre for a long time but never used it until now:blast

Another program I do use is WINGDB3 as I never use routes only tracks and it's a simple way of converting a route to a track.
