You will never need one

Right up to the moment you do !

I have one but have not looked at any of the footage since the first weeks novelty wore off. However its always running and god forbid i am ever involved in some sort of a prang ..........

I am suprised that Insurance companies are not offering some discount for having one ( some may be already but not that i am aware of)

I am going to get one due to the amount of idiots, scammers, cash for crash frauds and generally dangerous twats out there.

Took wifey out for a pub meal on Wednesday and coming back nearly had a head on with a complete prick in a white transit type van who was carrying out an almost suicidal overtake, I had to brake almost to a stop and get the car right over to the left almost up the verge to avoid the wanker. I think a dash cam is the way to go to at least cover myself in the event of an accident.

Just make sure you buy a good one. There are a few cheap ones that the footage is crap.
Theres plenty of reviews about. I have the Nextbase recommened by Which.

I have one to protect me against twats. The issue you have after a collision is proving you were not at fault and Insurance companies don’t fight your corner unless you have evidence.

I don’t really like having one stuck to my windscreen but on balance thought it was a good idea.

I have a Blackvue 720S, and it's a great bit of kit. I also have the battery pack, so it'll record while the car is parked, which is great if someone hits you and drives off, but more importantly it'll record the totty going in and out of my gym, so there's some material for the evenings festivities as well. :beerjug::D

My car was delivered a few weeks back but I'm not home to pick it up yet. I'm getting the manufacturer's own brand unit installed before collection, assuming it's available (MK I recently discontinued and MK II is due out any minute now). It's bloody expensive at £400 but there's no dangling wires and no chance of it flying across the dashboard. It's secured to the windscreen just under the rear view mirror and the cabling is all run through the roof lining. Also has a rear facing camera so it can record the twats behind that do something stupid because they're too busy effing around with their phones.

I resent the fact that a dash cam is now pretty much a necessity but they're good for peace of mind.

You can get a good one on Amazon for change out of £100. In fact, my wife paid about £40 for hers and is over the moon with it.

Better to have one and not need it than need it and not have one!

Bit of an update…fitted a dashcam in the car a year or so ago but unit failed and out of warranty. Wasn’t expensive.
Now looking for a new one but want a wifi one that I can download to an iPhone app if needed.
Any recommendations?

I recommend Thinkware U3000 front and rear. I does some other things too, Verbal speed camera warnings are better than what I expected.

I’ve got Nextbase 322GW in the wife’s car and my VW camper which are full HD1080p.

I got the best spec Nextbase for my daughters car that works with Wi-Fi and is 1440p, I think it’s the 522GW model around £160, a great unit when used with a fast microSD card.

I’m going to fit the optional rear screen add-on cameras to both my dash cams in case of getting rear ended. In the event of an insurance dispute it could really swing things my way.

Hope I never need it.

I've got Halo dashcams by RoadAngel. Good bits of kit and easy to wire in.

The app is pretty easy to use too, both to connect and download pictures and videos.

I’ve got the Innov front and rear a car pulled out on me on a local roundabout despite being lit up like a Xmas tree, footage sent to local force and driver prosecuted for due care.
The picture shows when he first saw me lol. You can see my lights reflecting in his door.
Both cars have front and rear cameras.

I've got a Nextbase 622GW. Complete pain in the arse. Front failed within a month of fitting, replaced. Now about every month it freezes and you have to reset and reformat the sd card.

Spoke to Nextbase and they said you need to reformat card every few weeks. I said why don't I have to reformat my Innov card every 3 weeks then! Spoke to Innov and they said absolutely no need to format their sd card unless you have an issue, although sd cards can fail.

Not impressed with the 622gw at all and if you google, I am not the only one that has freezing issues with their dashcams.

That’s a shame, our Nextbase have all performed perfectly. It pays to use the fastest branded microSD cards you can get eg U3 standard. Older standard Class10 cards are no longer fast enough.

Yes you need one. It can be the difference between someone claiming you were at fault in the event of a collision or you being able to prove 100% that any injury or damage claim was not down to you.
Get one which records in 4k and if you have a rear window in your vehicle get a rear facing camera also.
Nexbase seem to be a trusted system.

This ^^^^^

Both wifey & I have been involved in a no fault accident, supplying the dashcam footage meant the other side had no option but to admit liability. Without it they may well have contested who was at fault. Don't forget the insurance companies will do what's best for them if they can get away with it.

I’ve been using Nextbase supplied cards. Now I’m using the innov recommended cards. I’ve had to reset once due to freezing.

I'm looking to junk our permanently wired 522GW as well as it occasionally just stops working. Tried several microSD cards with no change in behaviour and just don't trust it now. Frankly you shouldn't have to reformat a card unless either the card or the device is faulty. The Nextbase software has proved pretty poor as well and with their move to a subscription model for their later devices I'll not be considering Nextbase for our next camera.
