Totally unrelated to bike travel but I’ve got to perform magic at San Roque power plant for a month from mid October and the closest airport is Gibraltar. Is it a pain getting a hire car there and taking it into Spain?

This trip has got the potential to work out very well for me because there’s a WSB round at Jerez at the end of October and we always get Sundays off so given that it’s about 1hr from the plant to the circuit I might go for a day out :thumb2

can't you just stroll across the border and hire a car on the Spanish side?

just looked at Google maps - Avis "Gibraltar Airport" is in Spain!

What about hiring a motorcycle or maxi scooter. It would be useful on your day/s off for a jaunt into the southern Spanish mountains
plus the WSB.

Sadly it’s a work trip so I’ll have 2 large holdalls plus a laptop bag and that makes bike hire a non starter. Not that my employer would find it amusing if they found out they were hiring me a motorbike for business use.

That doesn’t exclude me doing a personal hire if I can sort out collection and drop off times.

I’m strictly a Hertz man because I’ve already got a lot of points and points make prizes in the form of free car or van hire.

you'll be getting a taxi to Algeciras then

Fly into Malaga, it's an empty AP7 from there and will only take 60 minutes. www.malagacar.com are really good to deal with.
I’ll be honest and say that’s the way I suspect I’ll be routing myself.

We’re limited in who we can use for rentals because I work for one of those large corporations who strike deals with big rental companies, hotel chains etc and it’s frowned upon to go outside their preferred suppliers which can be a pain at times.

All the big names are in the terminal. The Spanish don't like tolls so when you go from A7 to AP7 look in your rear view mirror and realise there's nobody behind you .

My company don’t like tolls because of the charges going back to them via the hire company so I set my phone navigation to avoid tolls. It’s a full on pain in the arse because they always hit you a few weeks late and by then I’ve closed the expenses and have to open a new charge against the job. Best avoided :D

do the hire cars have electronic tags as in Spain there is always the option to take a ticket entering a peage zone and pay on exit like France, with a card, which you can then expense

I’ve no idea, I just avoid toll roads using anpr if I’m in a hire car.

Hi Andy, apologies as I've only just seen this thread. The car hire company's are across the border in La Linea, its literally about a 5 minute walk from Gib Airport, as they are in Spain all the cars are on Spanish plates, so no issues driving it in Spain. You can fly into Gib from Manchester or Gatwick. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, I’ll see where my employer tells me to fly into but Manchester to Gibraltar would be ideal for me.
