As per the title, I renewed our car insurance with Saga last year, locking the price for 3 years. Both policies are up next month so I've followed Martin Lewis's advice getting quotes a month in advance and a quick check on Saga's website has confirmed we're being offered the same price on both policies we paid last January. The price lock isn't mandatory so you can move elsewhere if you wish but in my experience they are worth checking out as together we're saving a considerable wedge on what's being quoted on the fat singer site.

Saga came top in terms of value when screen scraping quotes for my recent car insurance renewal using Topcashback. I ruled out a couple of cheaper quotes due to the underwriter or high excess.

The premium was a bit higher than the renewal from Ageas but I have taken a punt on Saga as, so far, I have always had the Topcashback which is £45 in this case.

I didn't choose the extra initial cost of the 3 year fix.

What was the extra charge for the 3 year deal? I was previously on the deal and it finished last year and the price increase was quite a bit more than the fixed price I'd been on (which wasn't totally unexpected) so I rang them up and they gave me £50 off each policy which wasn't the cheapest quote I'd had, but was within an acceptable enough range for me to stay with them. The equivelent policies look to be at least £60 more each for us (£250 vs £310 for me)

can't remember - got the quotes a few weeks ago as advised by that Lewis bloke, which can save a few quid. It must have been a significant proportion of the heady £219 price (which will be reduced by the £45 cashback).

do you think you will save money by paying £930 for three years of insurance? I bet they have gamed it in their favour as huge numbers of people will reset the rate by changing vehicle, adding a driver, moving house, making a claim or getting a speeding fine.

Saga were fecking expensive when i went to insure the outback

suffice to say, I havn't used there services once

depending on your age etc, they can throw in low quotes sometimes just to get you on the books. I've had car & home insurance with them now and then. Next thing their glossy "magazine" sales brochure is on your doorstep. I guess I am a prime target for all their other services like cruises - retired, 61, private pension and they have probably noticed the change of postcode from Cheltenham to a much cheaper area, suggesting cash in the bank. I have made sure I have removed consent for any of their marketing bollocks on their online portal.

The £310 price pa was the minimum I'd have to pay on gocompare, the £250 is my renewal price from Saga so a saving this year of a minimum of £60 (the Saga policy is quite good and not checked if the £310 one was the same level of cover) and no doubt saving more next year as premiums rarely come down but as I said if for what ever reason they were more expensive next year for year 3 I can go elswhere with no penalty. Based on how it went the first time we did it (last year was year 4 so no longer locked to the original price) years 2 and 3 were significantly cheaper than the other quotes as they all went up while Saga stayed the same and the renewal for Y4 went up quite a bit before I negotiated it down. Hope that explains things?

Once again….. just because one fellow finds insurer XYZ good value today, it doesn’t mean that another bod will find insurer XYZ good value tomorrow. Always shop around for yourself, no matter what. It’s the joy of choice, use it.

My car insurance is up for renewal in January so I’ve just looked at Saga. 🤣🤣
Like for like Saga are quoting twice my current insurer, the xs is more & they want extra for legal etc.

I think I have found yet another con going on in insurance.
I have takes a new policy with RIAS through Money Supermarket
They have misteriously adjusted the value of my car to about 60% of its actual value, even though I set the price on the comparison site.
They are a bit lower than my current renewal quote but is it worth it?
Just feel like everything nowadays is a con.

does the price change if you adjust it and get a requote?

have you considered ringing them?

RIAS is part of Ageas so I would not expect them to be mendacious. All sorts of funny things happen when data is transferred from a comparison site to a broker such as RIAS. The onus is on you to check the data is correct in your contract application with RIAS before you press the buy button on their website.

I’m 62.
I’ve got quotes from them in the past for home & car & they’ve always been expensive. The cynic in me makes me think they prey on elderly people believing that they are getting a good deal because they specialise in over 50’s insurance etc.

Yes, that's correct. I'm just fed up of constant tweaking by the companies.. Had before several times where they trigger the voluntary excess, even though I quote without, so I concentrate on that.. (and also change compulsory excess)
I think I'll wait a few days, requote and if don't get a cheaper one, call them before insurance starts.

Annual car insurance trawl starts this week.
My Aviva renewal quote is £90 more than last year!! I’ve not had a claim since 2001!!

I'm 64 but I've never yet had a competitive quote from Saga, for bikes or cars.

Yup, everyone is different. My mum (who is 88, driving a VW Up) got a blinding quote from Saga. Or rather, I did it for her. They even offered her a three year deal. As my mother put it: “That I should be so lucky”.

An outage, second only to Rwandan genocide.
