I would like to hire a minibus or at least a car for a week or two in sorrento. have any of you any tips as to where the best place is to get one, or any "beware" tips would be good too..

We were there 18 months ago, feckin nutters behind the wheel and handlebars, we didnt bother hiring.

Lovely place though, would love to go back again :thumb2

Loads listed in Google.

Ring a couple up and find out what the score is, would be my suggestion. Chances are they will parley Englesi of some sort or another.

Yep Google does throw up a few, I just thought maybe someone on here might have hired a car or minibus there before and could give me some advice.

I went to Sorrento in 2008. I flew to Naples airport and got a very good deal on a hire car from the airport. There is a large compound about 10 minute walk or a short bus ride from the airport terminal. There are several operators in the compound. My car was from Sixt, but Hertz, National, Avis etc were there.

I used http://www.holidayautos.co.uk/ which is part of lastminute.com

Looking at a 7 day hire next April, you can get a 9 seater VW Caravelle for £545 from the airport. If you want it from downtown Sorrento the fee is £1600

make sure you fill the VW up with fuel before you return it - the fuel in Italy is expensive enough with being fleeced by the hire company

This won't be a problem for you, coming from Ireland, but have some Euro change on you for the road toll. There is a short toll section south of Naples and there are no manned booths. Keep your doors locked at the toll booths. Lots of beggars and opportunist thieves who will happily open your boot & grab a bag. No problem in Sorrento itself as the police would not tolerate it.

If you are there for 2 weeks you should have plenty of time to travel about, so take advantage of having a vehicle. The Amalfi Coast road is fantastic, but gets very busy. If you are going to visit Naples city, leave the VW at the hotel and take the Circumvesuviana train. Costs peanuts and is a lot quicker than trying to drive in, then find a parking space. Road up Vesuvius is a laugh - you have to walk the last 500m, that's 500m vertical so a lot of metres zig-zagging.

Pompei, Herculaneum and Paestum are all worth a visit on a cool day.

Someone said that they drive like nutters. I didn't find it a problem. To be fair, they seem to be a nation of people who drive like me.

Thanks again wessie, Some very good info and ideas there. i do intend to see as much as i can so thanks for sharing, it will help me...
Re driving /riding i usually just join in and go with the flow whever i am..
