Hi Guys,

Normally in bikes i only use bike specific oil as normal stuff sometimes affects wet clutches, but in the 1150 gs is the clutch using gearbox oil or engine oil? if it is part of the gerbox lube system i can use car oils foir the engine which seem to be a little cheaper..

Clutch is dry, engine oil is seperate from the gearoil.
Oil type amd make is very much a personal choice, try a search for engine oils to confuse you even more.

As a rule i always stick to what i've always used and i'm happy, when was the last time you heard of an engine going bang due to crap oil, most car engine oils are good enough for the BM engine.

I just sold an engine to a guy who ran a K1200RS without knowing where the difficult to see spy glass was  and between services it Seized  so really cooking oil is better than nuffin :D

I use Mobile 1 on my Airheads, (engine and gearbox) and the "cheaper" Castrol GPS, (the red stuff) on my Adventure

mobil 1 is 0w/40. is that not a bit thin for hot weather use?
dificcult to know as it's not listed on BMW lube chart.

Read:

Bottom line:
Follow BMW specifications in the manual. Make sure that
API SG or SH is explicitly stated on the can. API SJ or SL
is not enough according to BMW. Go for thicker oils as 20W50
or 10W60. Many low cost car or diesel engine oils will do fine.

Mobil 1 over here comes in a variety of grades including 15W-50, 10W-40, 5W-30, etc etc.

hmm:

" Use this opportunity to create in store displays and promote the full range of approved BMW motorcycle lubricants."

Oil in usa is a different standard to euro oils, Mercedes benz got caught out a while back, saying 20k miles ( or something similier ) between oil changes on fully sythn, US oil is spec'd different and the engines were going tits up inbetween oil changes.

Mercedes quietly paid up to replace the engines, and changed the service intervals.

:D :D

...but do you change oil at recommended 6k or more cautious 3kish?

...and do you change the filter every time or every other time if you go for the 3k change?
