Hi there

I run a 2004 twin-spark 1150RT and have been told that a number of boxer motors have suffered excessive carbon build up, some resulting in premature engine failure.

I's believed that this has something to do with the use of supermarket-branded fuel.

Is this the case? I use branded fuels most of the time (80% +) and try to use V-Power or the equivalent every third or fourth tankful. Is this enough or do I need to use some form of additive?

:)

Additives are snake oil. Don't use them! This week Fifth Gear did a scientific, lab controlled experiment on a number of additives on the market that promise all sorts of power gains, improved torque blah blah blah.

The net result was that all of them resulted in a reduction in power output ranging from 2-8% proving that there is no such thing as cheap power gains.

Difference between 95 octane and 97 octane not worth extra money, you would do well to give it some full throttle to keep it clean!

Excessive carbon buildup is primarily due to excessively rich fuel/air ratios &/or burnt oil due to bypass or inefficient valve stem seals. Very high mileage then becomes a factor (thanks to modern unleaded fuels,) where "clean" burn fuel additives are "possibly" effective. The likelyhood is, you will sell your vehicle well before any gains are realised....:rob
