Carnet - Mauritania, Senegal, Mali

[Number 6]

Does anyone know if a Carnet is required for Mauritania, Senegal and Mali? I've done quite a bit of searching with conflicting results. Some sites say that it's required for all vehicles, some say required for vehicles over 4 years old and some say over 5 years old.

The RAC site isn't too helpful and they are responsible for issuing the damn things

It's 5 years old.

The fact that the president's son has a second hand car import business and you're not allowed to sell anything there is purely coincidental of course

There are way around it though- we've taken a 72 landy, a 15 odd year old Merc van and a pile of scoots through..the lany (accompanied by an even older ambulance bodied landy ) was part of the Plymouth Dakar rally, but this year we did it in the old merc and didn't have any problems.

Hi,

Currently in Senegal. Didn,t need a carnet for Mauretania, Senegal or the Gambia. Had to pay 20 euros getting into Mori and CFA 5000 = about 5 pounds =for each entry into Senegal. The Gambian customs said there was a charge but they waived it because I was such a nice guy.

I don,t know about Mali. When I was looking at the possibility of visiting I thought it was required so ruled it out as I did other places in W Africa because RAC were going to take so long to process it.

i asked the same on HU and got this
as long as you enter Senegal via Kidira (Mali) , or Farafeni / Barra (from Gambia ) or Diama (from Mauritania ) ,you will be ok . You will have to pay ... from 5 Euros to 75 Euros , but either case is nothing compared with what a carnet cost.

Hi Again,

There does seem to be an issue about age of bike. Mine is new, went over at Rosso and back at Djama - there is such a difference you wonder if they are in the same country - no problem - a relative term at Rosso - either way. Met two German bikers on R80 and R100 gs who had crossed over at Djama. Fairly straightforward so I don`t know what the issue is.

PS Buy the insurance at the border. They risked trying to get to St. Louis and got stopped by a police check and `fined`20 euros each. Cant help with the price because it seems to be a lot about negotiation but it might be worth checking on the internet to see if you can get a rough idea from one of the assurance companies in Senegal. The West Africa insurance covers all apart from Mauritania. No insurance problem there. 10 euros for 7days.
