Using my carpuride at night was painful. Super bright and I couldn't see an easy way of turning the screen off.
Thats because I didn't look for it. Select the 'CarHome' icon, and it drops you though the device set up screen. On there there is a big icon that says 'Display off'. Does what it says. Leaves the audio running. If you tap the screen again it drops you back into the device icons, from there just press the car play icon in the top margin. There is also a brightness adjust icon.
This might be a software level option. I bought mine in June this year and its running the following. I've no idea how to update the firmware
