case of the disapeering clutch fluid

hi so opinions please
bike has 16000 on the clock was parked up over winter went to it found clutch had no pressure assumed that fluid was low so topped it up bled the clutch and got it working again fluid level has remained constant for last 600 miles but had a few slight clutch slips at higher revs 5 th gear when giving it some welly
but havent had any problems for at least 300 miles and been two up and fully loaded ect
clutch only engages on last inch of lever extension is this normal ?
tried my best to get it too slip under load but not had another slippage ?
so reccomendations please

It is worth checking that the reservoir is not overfilled, that can cause them to slip, also worth removing the starter to look at the clutch for signs of oil contamination, the slave cylinders do appear to fail occasionally, my 1100 has a cable, primitive eh ;):thumb2
 
Had similar on my 1150 a year or two ago Mikey. The seal in the clutch slave cylinder goes which allows the fluid to travel along the clutch pushrod where it then gets thrown onto the clutch plate. Sooner or later you will need a new clutch.

You could dtart by doing as Stewart suggests and take the starter off to check if the clutch has oil on it. :thumb2

you think this can be caught in time by replacing the slave ?

It's hard to guess, but hopefully so Mikey.

I didn't catch on when the same happened to me and ended up having to fit a new clutch and slave. Bloody stupid of me it was, as when you think about it, where did the bloody fluid go? :blast :)
 
Mikey, I had the same problem, but as all my fluid came out at once all over a hot exhaust I could tell there was something amiss by the cloud of smoke. Turned out it was the clutch line rotted at the slave end (Steptoe has posted on the problem). Changed the line and the slave and right as ninepence now. So you might not need a new clutch.
