Hi
I have an '00 R850GS without a catalytic converter which I bought second hand with 22000 miles on it. It ran pretty smoothly with only slight surging. Have just had a 24000 mile service and found the surging much worse. Mechanic swore valves and synch was spot on. Said I should try a fix he had found worked. He made up a link and joined terminals 30 and 86. he said bike would learn new setting after 30 miles or so. There had been no CCP pug fitted.

After some research on this and other sites I determined the following: (and hope I got it right)

Connections looked at from gear lever side of bike
[connections 1-9 are marked on white female base ; bracketed figures are
as on CCP plug}

3 6 (30) 9

2 (87) 5 (87A) 8 (86)

1 4 7

Note ...Only connections 6, 2, 5, and 8 are used.

I also noted the method of resetting

1 remove fuse 5
2 wait one minute
3 replace fuse 5
4 turn on ignition
5 open and close throttle twice
6 turn off ignition

When I did this and tried the bike out it was OK at low revs but when I accelerated the power was right down.

After some more reseach on the web I came across the following on a Dutch BMW site.

Type GS CCP colour Connections BMW parts number Motronic version

Looking at this I could see that the correct setting for my bike was indeed no CCP. The mechanic with his 30 86 connection had used one for the reduced power version of the R850GS so maybe it wasn't surprisng that I found the power reduced. I bravely decided to try Steptoe's 30 87A connection which I noted was for an 1100GS non Kat bike. This gave me back the power and reduced the surging to a quite liveable level possibly slightly better than the pre service level.

Now some questions

1. Will it be harmful to leave it on the Steptoe setting? Presumably its little brain now thinks it's an 1100. Does this mean running it a bit richer - assuming an 1100 wants a bit more petrol at any particular revs?

2. Is it worth trying 30 87 the setting for the kat version 850 or does a kat version require a leaner mixture and a too lean mixture causes surging?

3 Should I try adjusting the valves myself as per www.advrider.com/Wisdom/OVADv2.2.pdf
The mechanic said he had adjusted them. Is the setting really critical?

4 The mechanic put in new bosch FR6DDC plugs. The bike had had platinum plugs but the central electrode of the one he showed me had worn right down. Is it worth trying the single electrode RC9YC ? Opinions seem to vary.

TIA (and no guarantees on correctness of diagrams) hm looking at the preview the spacing of my diagram hasn't come out properly but I guess it's intelligible. The normal fuses are below and to the left. See Steptoes photo.
