Cat on an adventurer

I have a 2004 adventurer and when I bought it, it did not occur to me that it was not fitted with a Cat, or the cat that was on there has been replaced, does this have any affect on the engine as it now has a Y piece with it looks like a connection for the Lamda connection, also the engine uses about third of a litre of Oil every 1000 miles is this normal

Welcome Tony :) I have a de-catted 1150 and apart from derestricting is slightly and giving the ability to run on leaded fuel it should have little impact. They do use oil and 1/3 litre per 1000m is not so bad - B*W say up to 1 litre/1000m is acceptable, it will get better as the miles increase.

How many miles does it have on the clock?
 
High the engine has 22000 on the clock and seems to run okay but sometimes smells a bit of hot oil occasionally
That is low! - It should be getting better now but they are all different. If it runs and pulls OK and gives 45mpg ish I would not worry too much.
 
My 1150GS uses hardly any oil at all, really :) Don't worry about the cat - mine's been decatted as well and apart from a bit of popping on the overrun it's been fine. You might want to check the forum for 'steptoe link' and set aside an evening or two to read up on fuel mappings.

I use a moderately heavy semi-synth oil, 15W40 springs to mind - there's no point going for 0W40 synthetics with a boxer engine, the tolerances are just too big.

Checking the oil, I use the following procedure: take the bike for a ride until there are 4-5 segments on the temp gauge. Find some level ground and put the bike onto the centre stand. Take a minute or so to take off your lid and gloves, to allow the oil to drain back from the oil cooler, and then look in the sight-glass - my oil level is pretty consistently half-way up. The previous owner told me that the higher the oil is above that point that the more the bike tended to use oil. This is my first Beemer bike and it's a sample of one, so maybe I'm just incredibly lucky.

Either way, don't stress and go ride the sucker, it's what they're for :D
 
Mine suddenly started going better and using less oil around 26,000 miles!

It now is at 32,000, feels great and after a cannectomy has more low rev ooomph and uses less fuel. I am now expecting 230 miles before the low fuel light comes on from a standard 1150GS tank albeit with the filler neck mod.

Seems to be consistently over 50mpg and although I ride smoothly I don't hang about.

Oil consumption much lower now than when it had less than 25,000 on the clock.
 
Oil consumption.

22000 is not even running in milage, these are not jap bikes! keep riding it and enjoy but don't run on unleaded except in an emergency as the valves /seats will not stand up to it. Oil consumption gets better mine has now done 49000 (miles) and oil consumption has improved no end.

The 15 is loads thicker than the 40 when cold and will take longer to reach the valves etc on startup. The 0 is still thicker when cold than the 40 when hot, but will ensure better lubrication for startup.

I think the reason that a some bikes lose oil with the lighter synthetic oils is because they are so light and the tolerances are lower when cold. Anyway, it seems to be working so far.

I think you are a wee bit confused here....

Of course they're designed to run on Unleaded and ONLY Unleaded.....they couldn't fit a 'Cat' as standard if they weren't...;)

However, you can use leaded if you have a 'Y' Piece instead of the 'Cat'....unless you want to screw up the 'Cat'...

I ment dont run on LEADED not unleaded, bit early in the morning for this sort of thing !, (just to see if your all awake!)
