Electric gremlins on an Adventure

Hi all just bought a 2000 mile Advenure Gs1200 2007 bike, I have a slight problem with it, it has cut out altogether on a couple of occasions ! (no display in the speedo etc ) it has always restarted straoight away and ran fine ? any ideas ? also when switching the bike off after about approx 60 secs the low beam light comes on for a few seconds than switches off..is this normal ? Can anybody on here put me straight Cheers

Faulty electrical contacts inside the ignition switch barrel, a known problem.

Also check your battery terminals are tight, and that the igniton key is all the way to the 'on' position.

Battery terminals are tight, it was the first thing I checked,
will the ignition switch barrel contacts benifit from a squirt of WD40 ? the bike has only done 2000 miles, have BMW done a recall on the switch if it is a known problem ? will it be FOC

A mates 07 Adventure had the same problem.

I think it was down to the EWS. Check it's had the recall.

EWS is the little box of gubbins near the ignition barrel that verifies the key is genuine etc

They had a habit of going wrong a few years back and there was a FOC recall

Thanks for the info , i think it has had all the recall's done

Sounds like the problem is the ignition switch , the Main BMW dealer that serviced it 200 miles ago says he has never had a problem with cutting out om GS's , but looking on this forum it is quite a common problem..or do you think he is being economic with the truth ??

Mate at work with 05 GS says his ignition switch vibrates totally to off whilst riding. Try the igintion in a new F650GS....very very stiff. Much better.

If it was a fault with the EWS (the immobiliser) then you would get "EWS" shown in the multifunction display to show it had operated to immobilise the bike.

Make sure you turn off everything electric before turning off the ignition i.e indicators, auxilliary lights, heated grips, gps. I've got/had this intermittent headlight coming on business for a while but never had the bike cut out.
