:( Not sure if this is the right section for this, but: Guys if you buy a secondhand helmet off this or any other site advertised as pre-fitted with Autocom (or whichever) head set please check with the seller that he/she has fitted it correctly. I bought gooods inc. a helmet from a fellow of this neighborhood very recently and broke one of my own rules (do not buy a s/h helmet without bulletproof provenance) only to find that when checking said helmet the com's fitting ingoramus has neatly cut out two sections the polystyrene shell to accomodate the speakers:eek: Obviously did not rtfm or installation instructions 1st.

Don't know whether I feel more angry with him or me at the moment. One expensive comms. lead though 'cause the rest is scrap:(

Rant over

Why is it scrap if they are neatly trimmed how does that affect the shell

Bearing in mind that I can't see what you are seeing, It's been talked about before but primary inpact resistance is required on top, front and rear

Actual impacts in the ear area tend to be slide rather than oblique therefore the integrity should not really be an issue? Should it?

This thread is going to be epic....

Shock path

I'm no expert, but doesn't the whole shell act as a path through which the impact shock is disipated wherever it is hit:nenau

If anyone can tell me otherwise (who really knows) I'll entrust it with SWMBO's head. Otherwise I'll donate it to the Taliban offroad riders benvolent fund.:augie

Without seeing said 'cutting' I couldn't comment, but I have no problem personally with trimming the lining/polystyrene to make Autocom speakers fit- ;)

Whilst it's not a surgically precise modification, it doesn't go more than about 3mm into the poly. so maybe I'm over reacting? I'll try to take a pic. and let you more experienced guys profer an opinion. Anyway thanks for the feedback.

If I'd had to cut 3mm out of the polystyrene to make the speakers fit I'd be more than happy myself ;) you should see the mess it makes fitting into a Multitech- that has the foam bonded to the shell

I've had to use the "hot table spoon" method to increase the space required to fit my AUtocom speakers in an Arai lid coz I've got feckin big ears.

I am 100% sure that this mod does not compromise the integrity of the helmet.

Mark I think you could be alright with that. Emergency Services helmets are cut much deeper than that, admittedly it's done professionally and with an exact fit reamer, but if it's just the fact the components of the helmet have been altered that's bothering you, you may not have too much to worry about.

Thanks

Thanks guys, glad I didn't slag the seller off too much now and having shown Sarah your thoughts she's happy to give it a go.
