I got a new desktop about a year ago and yesterday needed to copy a data CD.

I copied the CD to my desktop and then burnt the files onto a DVD and then a CD. When I tried to play the CD (and DVD) a message came up saying that the programme will only run from a CD / DVD drive.

Is there a way round this, or failing that can anyone recommend a Nero type programme that's free (as I don't use one often enough to warrant buying one again - the last one disappeared with the old PC)

Thanks in anticipation, Lee :beerjug:

i've read that through several times, and i don't understand what you're trying to do.

What was the 'data'?

If it was some form of music or video that played in a cd player or DVD video player, it wasn't 'data' for the purposes of this.

It's a ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) CD. I've had it since 2001 when I started to do a course. Done a few copies when I had Nero or the like.
Tried copying to my hdd then burning to cd (which it does OK) but in trying to open the app (which I click on to open on the original cd) to run the copy it won't work. It comes up with a "File Protection Error" and "This file is designed to be run from a cd drive only".

Does that make more sense?????

I'm trying to do this copy for my 75 year old Aunty who's tried going on a computer course but cannot get on with all the "old folk" there!!!!!! (I must say she is a very young 75 :thumb )

Yes.

You'll need to save it as an .iso file, which is an exact image of a data disc......then when you dble click on it, any prog like nero or roxio (both of which you can get free trials of to do the one job) will burn a copy of the disc for you, that ought to work :thumb2

CD burner XP http://cdburnerxp.se/help/data/copydata I have been using it on various machines from XP to Win 7

Done that all done - the fun bit is getting it to run as it doesn't (and hasn't since about 2004) Autorun!!!!! But if I open the the files on the CD and click on the application it starts OK then :thumb2

Thanks Alan

(and thanks Bill - but I need it easy. and this works ;) )

Sorry if I wasn't clearer, it was trying to do a copy I was having trouble with. That's all sorted now :thumb2

The CD was made to run on 95/98/NT4, it didn't seem to like later systems - but I can still get it to run using the method I described earlier, just hoping I can explain that to Aunty :)
