Celebrating Tom Crean, a true hero

Greatest Irishman ever IMHO; even greater (by a wisker) than Joey

South Pole inn Annascaul is a must visit even though its no longer in the family, they serve reasonably priced first class food and its a bikers paradise down that way

I was aware of his exploits and endeavours but only as part of the Shackleton expedition (one of my personal heroes) I didn't realise he had gone on one of Scott's expeditions.

3 Antarctic expeditions

I was aware of his exploits and endeavours but only as part of the Shackleton expedition (one of my personal heroes) I didn't realise he had gone on one of Scott's expeditions.

I think he was on 3 Antarctic expeditions

Discovery
Terra Nova
Endurance

and may be the only one who was on all 3 - heard that somewhere.

It is not right that he is so poorly commemorated and when I win the Lotto....

A few fairly recent pictures

Statue in the small memorial garden across from the pub :

The pub (it's on a hill, alright :P) :

And the family crypt :

At least he has a memorial. I've searched Kilkea, where Shackleton was born, and there's no mention of him at all :(

That's a pity - there should be some momento of this great man.
Why were you searching? :nenau

Tom Crean was one of the true giants from the golden age of polar exploration. His example, along with all the others, was something we would talk about at smoko back in my old job at BAS.
