Getting a PDA or smart-phone working effectively on a bike is going to take some fiddling around with cables etc that just adds to the fragility of the whole set-up. A made for purpose device is a better bet IMHO though I under stand that for those with a capable phone and no GPS it's a tempting, and cheaper, prospect.
I've been using smartphones with tomtom or route 66 on the bike with no probs for a few years now. Only a power lead to the phone, and bluetoothed to a Cardo earpiece. So no fiddling around with cables, and it's taken me many thousands of miles.
While it might be nice to have a tomtom rider or similar, I don't think it would be any more effective than my existing set up. And considerably costlier!
