Cell phone as/with GPS

Getting a PDA or smart-phone working effectively on a bike is going to take some fiddling around with cables etc that just adds to the fragility of the whole set-up. A made for purpose device is a better bet IMHO though I under stand that for those with a capable phone and no GPS it's a tempting, and cheaper, prospect.

I've been using smartphones with tomtom or route 66 on the bike with no probs for a few years now. Only a power lead to the phone, and bluetoothed to a Cardo earpiece. So no fiddling around with cables, and it's taken me many thousands of miles.

While it might be nice to have a tomtom rider or similar, I don't think it would be any more effective than my existing set up. And considerably costlier!:)

Whilst, in terms of cables, I would only need a power lead and could plug an extension to my in helmet headset. I would need to rig up a cigar lighter adaptor on a fly lead, waterproof that, and then buy an otter box or similar to keep the phone dry (have tried using GPS in a tank bag and it's not a great solution as it's too far from line of sight). I would then have problems operating TomTom though the membrane of the otter box as the touch screen controls are fiddly enough without it let alone with gloves on.

I do already have a GPS though, so for me it's the emergency back-up or for use in the car.

Here in the USA, Amazon has Garmin Colorado 300 on sale for $250 USD.
Handheld unit that is waterproof etc.... I am sure there is a handlebar mount to go with it. I'd like a bit bigger screen, but that is not a bad price for a waterproof and vibration hardened unit I suppose:blagblah

err close but no cigar this time..

Using a couple of cut down shampoo bottles, I have an N95 on the handlebar with a modified car cigarette charger running off the extra power outlet on under the fuel tank. Then it's bluetooth voice guidance as previously mentioned. Works a treat! :) Also, because it's Nokia the maps from a 100 countries can be downloaded on to the SIM card if you want to go a little further..
UMMM not quite, cant download maps onto a sim card, however you CAN download maps onto a memory card, so is that what you meant or am i just technically stoooooppppidddddd, and polite no four letter replies please peoples.

Any way, really must go as am about to chair a meeting by the Royal Pedantic Society, lol pmsl
