Centre Stand fell off

I found a broken bolt on the floor on Saturday when I unlocked my bike. It had sheared off from something but I couldn't identify what it was or if it belonged to the bike - everything seemed to be in place. As I pushed the bike out into the road, the centre stand started to rub on the back wheel. It was the bolt on the right hand pivot point for the centre stand - which is on the 'inside' of the stand rather than easily visible on the 'outside'. For some reason it had sheared off at some point in time and then worked its way loose. Very strange.

Anyone else had this happen to them? At least it's not software-related.

Cheers, Norman

Well, it's going in to Battersea/Park Lane next week. They've agreed to take it in as the 8am first job 'while I wait' and no quibble about it being a warranty issue. The parts have been ordered today.

Should be interesting. My first ever use of the Battersea facility - my bike was bought and serviced at Prestige.

Cheers, Norman

Never thought to look there - thanks. There's no damage to the stand or the other bolt, so I'm happy enough just getting the bolt replaced - I just want someone else to have the job of stretching the return spring onto it's fittings!

Cheers, Norman

Centre stand

I had exactly the same a few months ago. No apparent cause, never ridden the bike off the stand or toppled it over; Anyway it was replaced while I waited and no charge.

Same thing happened to me, go it replaced under warranty 3 weeks ago... the hardest part being the springs I believe!!

I'm worried that it would happen again and hit the rear tire as I'm ridding, I'm hopping for a recall, I don't know how those things get started though. I also wonder if there is a way to replace this bolt with a better one.

Centre stand

Same for me at about 12,000 miles. Replaced under warranty and no sign yet of repeat at 19,000 miles. Perhaps the new stand for '06 is part of a cure.

This happened to me last year. I assumed it was because when I rode with the GF on the back and we were fully loaded, we bottomed down hard on the center stand a few times in bumpy corners. I went to the local hardware store and bought an exact replacement, angled head and all, for pennies. I now carry a spare in my tank bag.

Here is the trick for dealing with the springs - you must use your legs. Put bike on side stand. Sit on floor on right side of bike facing to the rear. Lay on your back and use your right leg to push back on the center stand until the holes line up. At this point you will be able to reach around and get the new bolt started. You will first have to push the center stand out of the way and grab the protrudig threads of the old bolt with pliers and unscrew it. Very easy.

Centre stand tempted fate

How could I have posted that two days ago - see above!  Probably because I have not used the centre stand for a while.

Nipped up to Edinburgh yesterday to see the Dutchman at Motorrad Concepts. Put the bike on the centre stand and he pointed out that both wheels touched the ground.

On inspection, one stand bolt had dropped out and the other had sheared. :(

Back into Balderstons in Peterborough today, who replaced the last sheared bolt without drama. They are checking with the BMW technical staff to see if this is the reason the centre stand was redesigned for '06 and whether there is a technical fix available. Apparently new stand will not fit '04-'05 machines. Not much point in just replacing the bolts if they will shear again in a few thousand miles. Ho-hum. :(

Will report the outcome.
