I have just been told by my dealer (who I asked to get me a CoC) that because my bike is a 1997 then it is not eligable for a CoC. How do I resister the bike in UK without a CoC. I have heard tale of a type of inspection that costs a fortune, any ideas?

I live in Northern Ireland (UK). My friend brought a 1100gs from Germany last year, all you need is an MOT certificate. To get one the speedo face had to be changed to mph and the headlight changed to shine on the opposite side of the road. You can ride the bike for one year on the German numberplate without an MOT certificate. To register it you will also need an insurance certificate along with the MOT which can be issued on the bike's frame number before a UK plate is issued.

Hope this is of help as things may be slightly different in England. Someone correct me if i'm wrong please!

Done this a couple of times, try the following:

Get an MOT on the bike using the frame number, not the registration number.

Arrange insurance using the frame number with the proviso that you provide the insurer with the new UK registration number as soon as it's issued.

Go to the local DVLA office, give them the MOT & the original documents from Germany. They will charge a few £££ for transferring the "nationality" of the bike. They may also fax the German documents to the German Embassy to ensure that the bike is not stolen (or subject to finance?). They charge £25.00 (?) for this.

They will tell you what your new registration number is. You will also have to buy Road Tax (6 months min) at this point (£33.00?).

Phone your Insurance company & tell them the reg. number.

Get a number plate made.

Logbook will arrive within a couple of weeks max.

To pass the MOT:

Leave the Speedo alone, cheaper option is buy a bike specific sticker that goes on the speedo face, giving equivalent mph figures.

On some bikes, a piece of black tape (insulating) in the correct place will allow it pass an MOT - this will stop the beam dazzling oncoming drivers. I assume you have an 1100GS - this should work as it did on an R80GS for me similar headlight.

Mind you, one benefit of delaying all of the above is that you can forget about Parking Tickets :D :D

I think you are referring to the SVA (Single Vehicle Approval) inspection.

This is done by VOSA (formerly Vehicle Inspectorate of DoT). Not all VOSA testing stations do SVA testing. It's not very involved for motorcycles and isn't very expensive either.

Basically what it's been introduced to do is ensure that vehicles not intended for use in the UK conform to UK type approval.

If you contact your local DVLA office they will tell you where the nearest SVA station is, what you need to do to ride your bike until the SVA is done and what needs to be done to meet SVA. It will all be in various leaflets they will give you.

Don't be tempted to ring the DVLA/VRO because they have changed to a centralised switchboard and you will be on hold for ages! Have a look in your local phone book under DVLA and visit the office to collect the info.
