Hi all.

This has probably been covered numerous times but....

I need to sort out some security for when we are away on the gs lc. We will be travelling two up with luggage (panniers, top box & tank bag). Can anyone suggest a decent chain and lock that is portable, and where they carry it. Have looked at pragmasis and almax but they seem a bit bulky? I could be wrong though..

Many thanks in advance all

Almax are certainly too big to tour with unless you are seriously concerned. at 20KG for the chain i have it is impractical at best.

I take a pragmatic view when touring and usually just put a disk lock on and be sensible as to where i park

Ok looks like a good disc lock is the answer, anyone got a suggestion for a good one. All reviews on them seem to be from 2012 backwards....

It depends on what you are doing when touring. I always have a disc lock with me when abroad, they are convenient, relatively light and portable and give an additional level of security. It is fast to fit and easy to use for short stops where you may be out of sight of the bike in circumstances where you may want to add another level of security. I would recommend one of the bright coloured lanyards to connect from the lock to the bars as well, Ive know loads who have tried to ride off with the lock still fitted. I use an Abus one like this -

However, I would always also have a D lock that fits in the underseat space of the bike (can't remember the model of Lock for the GS), this I would use if I was parked for extended periods, overnight in an insecure parking area. If I am out touring and say visiting museums or historical sites I would also have an Abus cable, which I could put through the sleeves of my jacket and through my lid, so I don't have to take it around with me.

With the D lock under the seat, the disc lock in my tank bag and the cable rolled up tight, it is not that much effort but adds plenty of options. Having said all that, I've yet to experience a problem when touring overseas, either myself or any of my various parties, with or without additional security ........

I have a Xena disc lock I use when parked up. Its pretty substatial 16 mm bolt iirc. Also its alarmed so if the bike moves it sounds a 120 db siren for about 20 secs. Batteries last about 3 years. I think mine is an XX14. Bought it from Ghost bikes about £60

I did see a guy in France a few years back who had fabricated up a narrow metal tray that he had bolted onto the bottom of his L/H pannier (TC) which had an Almax type chain and padlock in it. He effectively locked it to the tray when not in use. Said that with the weight that low down he didn't notice the weight with the rest of the bike loaded up for touring.:thumb2

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll find myself a decent disc lock then. I've got an Oxford tripwire/steel cable that I take and tie the helmets to when we are out and about and tie the bike up at night. Might get a u lock if I can find one that fits under the seat on the lc....

Thanks again
Ed

I have the Abus granit sledg 77 and I like it.
Small enough to carry on the bike sensibly.

I bought the 'web' version but you can buy the older model which is cheaper. It has a thicker rubberised shell over the main body

Read the blurb on resistance to attack time, strength & chemical attack etc. It has a high insurance rating.

All the best

Whatever you decide on, make it simple to use or put simply, you won't use it.

How to carry it? See the advice above. Look at your motorcycle, with its panniers, top box, pillion, tank bag and God knows what else. Where and how are YOU going to carry it? You'll work it out.

Whatever you do, do not forget the pound of butter in your fridge.
