Hi im a newbie - i bought a 1150GS 2002 in September at 23k miles cos they are so reliable and about two weeks ago the cam chain tensioner guide broke up resulting in valve burnout on one cylinder. As motorrad wanted £2k to fix I have decided to complete work myself- means a complete strip down splitting engine. i have been advised to construct a jig to save dismantling whole bike to keep frame together. Has anyone any experience of this ?? Heeeeeeellllpppp!!!

I aim to start work in a few days and have ordered all new parts required but constructing jig is first priority.:thumb

check this out

he is stripping his GS himself so you might get some ideas for a jig.....

keep us posted and some pics would be great as you go through the process, make it like a ride report:thumb2

Hey thanks 4 the link yeah he's used webbing to haul everything up from above which is what I was thinking of trying. I ll make a frame/jig of studding timber I think. Oh to have a workshop that nice though! I ll take pics all the way through and post them.

Hi and welcome to the site.
Sounds like you are in at the deep end with that job.
From what i have seen and read, you more or less remove the chassis from the motor rather than the other way round;hoisting it using roof rafters or some kind of frame.
I removed the entire back end of mine this year for various jobs, inc rear frame powder-coating but i have yet had to remove the front subframe.
Buy/borrow a Haynes or Clymer manual and take plenty of close-up digital pictures for reference.
Just an idea. Most of the £2000 you have been quoted is probably labour for the engine removal/replacement.If you were to deliver the engine in one piece to a dealer or independent specialist,he could strip it,replace the broken bits using the correct tools and workshop procedures and then you refit it to the chassis.I did this with a Triumph engine a while ago with no problems.
Either way,good luck.:beerjug:

Tks a lot - yeah i ve bought the manual which i think is a bit off-putting as Haynes suggests completely stripping front fork assembly as well. I asked BMW guys and they confirmed that if I split gearbox driveshaft swingarm assembly I could roll that lot away as one big lump. Gawd. one head and cylinder already removed and valves removed from it, so its a start.

Might be worth asking a Mod to move your thread to the 1150 technical section for more exposure.Or start a new one there.Just a thought.

hi,
just wondering about this guide thing, is it easy to replace the guide? and do you need a new cam chail also. How difficult is this to do?
mine has 40k on her and its a bit ticky, maybe the valve clearance but i think its the cam chain.
Think ill fit the improved cam chain adjuster as well while im at it.
all serious answers gratefully accepted. Sorry for the hi jack.

yeah it means a complete strip and egine split to replace guide blade but if you have done that much then may as well replace both chains at same time.make sure you have the mod or the tensioner too - its the one without the oil drain slot. I wouldnt lose sleep tho cos BMW said there was nothing you could do to prevent except change it normally at high mileage. G Luck

Hey Falcoron check your throttle bodies thats probably whats ticking, when bikes running put your finger on the inside of the butterfly shaft where the cable goes in and put a little pressure on ,see if your ticking stops.Bmw guy showed me if it is them just ride it and dont worry to much.I got new ones fitted under warranty about a year ago and theyre ticking again.

I am currently in the process of rebuilding an engine for a 02 R1150RT that spun a rod bearing. Removing the engine is not too difficult. I build a frame from wood using eye bolts and nylon strap to support the bike while the engine is out. Split the cases and you have access to the timing chain guides.
