Hi Folks, can anybody tell me is it possible to have the audio directions given on a Garmin 2610 changed to "left & right" instead of by "compass bearings".
Thanks
It does tell you to turn left or right generally. Presumably you're referring to the start of a journey where it says something like "Drive x miles North" and you're sitting there thinking "fine, which way's North?" The problem is that until you start moving it has no idea which way you're facing so it can't say whether you should turn left or right.
It works out which way you're travelling by comparing points; if a few seconds ago you were south of where you are now, then obviously you're heading north and it can work out whether you go left or right at the next junction. But at the start of a journey it has no previous position so you have to start moving so that it knows where you are _and_ which way you're going.
If you think back to when you relied on paper maps you may remember you had the same problem; once you've determined you're on XYZ street and which way to need to go, even if you know precisely where you are you probably needed to drive along a bit and find out the names of the adjoining roads to work out which way along XYZ street you were facing. "Drive North" is a lot easier than saying "Set off and if the next left is PQR street you're going the right way".
You don't need to move far to tell by the arrow which way you are pointing. I've pulled up on the bike before now (arrow pointing straight ahead obviously) and just by pulling the bike back a few inches to put it on its centre stand, has been enough to turn the arrow in the opposite direction. I never thought it was that accurate.
