Change GS for Tuono.....?!!

I'm having a dilema at the moment i have developed a hankering to replace my 2005 GS12 i've owned since new with a Aprillia Tuono. Dont get me wrong i love the GS and it has served me well but i can't get the fact the front end just doesn't feel quite "right" a lot of the time. What i mean is the vague feeling it somehow feels to have. i'm not sure whether it's me or something to do with the fact i had a tumble when the bike was a few months old due to a front end failure...which incidentally i have to add BMW sorted fully for no expense. I think i may regret selling the GS but feel i may need a change. Most of my riding is in the Yorkshire dales for pleasure with a bit of commuting and the odd trip to Ireland. Has anyone tried a Tuono or even better own both and can give me some accurate constructive feedback.

and I have a GSA 12.

I can honestly say that the GSA handles as well as the Tuono ever did,though the latter has more grunt.

I think you may regret the change.

Get both !

Hi i sold mine to buy a gsa in december, bought it new and had the tuono for six months but only done 900 miles on it . There a fantastic bike 10 out of 10 for fun they like the front wheel in the air but so do i , i have missed the bike but must say enjoy the 06 gsa now i have done 2500 miles on it .If you buy one there great ,,

you'll win on cool factor for sure but might find it a bit crap for commuting & touring

pot-holes of Ireland? stick with the GS

i had an 04 tuono for 12 months, top bike, i really miss it. gotta say though my missus hated riding pillion, its very difficult to be smooth with the throttle, its just so much fun to crack it wide open. carrying luggage is a problem too. i have still got a Famsa tank bag so if you do get a tuono and want the bag give me a shout.

Cheers Jeffers you have helped to make my thoughts on this matter possibly pro active. For one i dont do a great deal of commuting and my lass doesn't ride pillion since we had the sprogs. So as a pure fun road bike it gets the big thumbs up i guess!!? What about wind blast?

My guess is that you could be having some confidence problems also. A similar thing happened to me when mine was new and it was still slippery winter weather, I got rid of the crap Anakees and stuck some Conti Trail Attacks on the bike, but it knocked my confidence (new bike and new tyres) and I have only really started to get back to full lean fast corner riding after 3 months and 2500 miles.

Try sticking it out and put more trust in your riding and tyres than you probably are, ride normally, especially now the hot tarmac is here. I haven't quite scraped the pegs yet but i'm sure i'm not far off.

Made the switch from an 07 Tuono to a GSA, just couldn't get on with the Aprilia. Loved the engine, but just couldn't get the handling right, possibly because of the weight distribution (I'm a big chap so the weight sits high up).

It felt like it was always going straight on and there was just no confidence in the front end at all, which was a shame as I did really like it when it wasn't trying to kill me (such as a unprovoked lock-to-lock tankslapper at 30 on the Twin Bridges roundabout). Tried 2 full days of pro suspension setup, tested other examples at dealers but in the end no matter what I did, it wasn't working out.

I do miss the power though!

I have an 06 1200GS and an 07 Tuono. The GS is great for touring and commuting but the T is in a different league in terms of performance and handling. If you want performance this is a no brainer to be honest and my GS has Ohlins/ Remus /etc on it.

Height, weight, riding style, roads, suspension settings?

The thing that makes a big difference for me is how much rear preload I have. At c. 13 stone kitted up, I'm running close to maximum rear preload. This helps the bike to turn faster, gives more feedback from the front end and makes the bike feel more planted.

I reckon it depends on the type of riding you are going to do.From a performance point of view the Tuono would be th job, On the other hand , relaxed riding, touring, commuting or any traillie type stuff the GS is the job.

Even though the Tuono may outperform the GS it may not be very much faster in the real world. The GS can be great fun to drive the guts ou of.

the windblast is acceptable, the bikini fairing does well enough, i took it to france and had an absolute blast,

we were at the TT last week, my wife said that with the luggage on the GS was dull, i couldn't fecking believe it At last years TT she said she would never go on the tuono again because its too lairy, so i did the decent thing and got rid! now the GS is too dull. All i can say is she will have to get used to it i love the GS.

Get the Tourno. I have had a 2001 Mille from new and it hasn't missed a beat for those seven years. The handling (mine has Ohlin forks and shock but the Sachs setup is good too), braking, performance, build quality, looks, sound and general pleasure of ownership are all better than the GS. I have the GS for touring/commuting/two up riding (ie most of my journeys :frown ) otherwise I would take the Mille everytime.

I just bought a new 08 Tuono a few months ago. I love the thing: it's beautiful, sounds amazing with twin Akros, the power / acceleration is fantastic and I find it surprisingly comfortable. I use it every day to commute into London (though it's a bit harsh as it's a stiff track bike and London roads can be a bit s++t). I'm planning on going touring to the Alps over the summer. My mate's had a RSV for years and we've been away all over Europe, with me on the my GS1150. I was surprised how reliable it was and how you can actually tour on them.

I originally planned on selling the GS, but now I've decided to keep it as I wouldn't want ride the T through the winter. Also I'm gonna start touring with my girlfriend and no way is that happening on the Aprilia.

If you want to do thousands and thousands of miles a year, going long distances over crap roads, or need to do a lot of 2-up riding, keep the GS. If you want it more for the fun side of riding, and something that'll do 'practical' if need be, get the T.

I suppose the best situation would be to keep both, if you could.
