Change of bike, maybe

I do a lot of riding in the dark. Headlight wise
Nothing beats the led lights on the 1200 gs lc,
And the combo led lights and clearwater led driving lights were even better.

The standard headlight on the 1290 is crap
With the cyclops led upgrade they are better but not brilliant
I hope when I get round to fitting my Clearwater Darla's
The light wil be sufficient.

Personally I think you'll want your ducati back after a short while.
I went from an 1190 to a 2011 MTS , and then onto DVT-S , which incidentally has superb LED headlights.
The KTM engine is indeed a peach , however shitty switchgear , lights , handling ( compared to the Ducati) , mahoosive weight and the even bigger depreciation were to much for me to overlook.

I me been looking at the Darlas and they look mightily impressive. I would be interested to see how they look when you get them installed.

KTM 1290 SA

Overall a bit disappointing, having read so many positive things about this bike I was eager to test ride one. Crescent at Verwood are my local KTM dealer and were extremely helpful in getting me out for a test ride this morning. Paperwork took but a few moments to complete, reads and sign.

Afte a quick instruction on controls and features I was let loose and told to enjoy myself.

Within a few minutes it was obviously a comfortable position, good steering and low speed handling are excellent. The gear lever was set at an oddly high position but that would easily be rectified.

Both brakes are excellent.

The adjustable screen is woefully short even at its highest position, its not easy to adjust on the fly like the Ducati.

The engine and gearbox are great, but not massively more powerful than the MTS, the red warning light comes on all too quickly, but that maybe just because its still being run in, although I wasn’t told that.

The switchgear works well but does look a bit cheap compared with BMW & Ducati.

As it was daylight I couldn’t check out the lights and didn’t think to try the horn.

Its worst point by a country mile is the seat, it is poor and for nigh on £16 k very disappointing.

The luggage looks good but is extra, whereas it was included with my MTS, the top case is too small for two full size helmets.

I don’t think its for me, but definitely would consider it, if was getting ready for a refresh and KTM were chucking masses of goodies at it FOC.

I do have an SA, im surprised with your comment ref the screen its the first bike i have owned where i didn't want to rip the screen off.

The seat does take some getting used to, but it gets better with riding it and getting a few miles under your belt.

The shift lights are set low in the break in period but you can change them yourself.

I agree with the switch gear but i got over it quite quick and have come to like it.

Awesome bike love it.

If it was still running in they would be set at 6,000 rpm. A shame if that was the case 'cos it's at 6,000 rpm that the world starts going backwards.

A real shame, but it is only a light, i ignored it when i was on a test ride, bike was warm ect.

The screen might have been in the low position. The brackets can be swapped between high and low then you have the adjuster nob to raise it up and down.

Oh well you tried it and didn't like it, time to move on.

I may be thinking of a change soon but is the 1290 much better than the 1190 now the 1190 adv has been around for while? I would miss cruise can it be fitted now? I've seen some 1190 for under 12k new is the SA worth the extra money?
