I am thinking of changing my BMW fog lights

Fitted to crash bars on 1200 GSA

I will change to the BMW LED lights
They are supplied with cable and a new plug

It is however not a straight forward swap

The dealer says to chop the plug of the existing lights and splice in the new
plug
The existing plug will not fit the LED lights

My question is ...................

Is it possible to remove the cables from the existing plug and re wire them into the new LED plug
Or are these fancy plugs sealed units... anti tamper.. or whatever
I would prefer not to chop off splice in if possible

Any thoughts :nenau

I have just yesterday done an upgrade on my GSA.........

will let the pics do the talking. but basically I refused to cut the wires from the bike's loom... just not the right thing to do.
I ordered the plugs off eBay from Singapore and they arrived yesterday morning........

My NEW CREE LED lights arrived about 2 weeks ago and I was chomping at the bits... (I distributed 226 of these lights in SA last month and the chaps are seriously happy with them. at the cost of only £100.00 per set :augie)

I am seriously chuffed - also found that the lights are now well inside the protection of the actual metal bars... and with their aluminium construction - perhaps a very good alternative to the expensive BMW versions!

This is the link to eBay for those H11 connectors.......
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2PCS-HID-...H11-880-Male-Connector-Adaptors-/270947841224

The CREE lights - I've been given a distributorship... busy negotiating the packaging and the supplying of the lights with the plugs for easy fitment to the BMW's harnass already fitted by the factory.
Will let you know as soon as they are available.

I "might" however have a spare set arriving in the UK in 2 weeks time for further testing..... if interested let me know...

Ooh! Ooh! You star!

I've been grappling with exactly the same issue but hadn't been able to find the male connectors to avoid cutting the OEM loom.

Many felicitations to you kind Sir!:bow

Hi Andy
Are you going to fit the plugs to the BMW LED ,........or some other type?

Those plugs are a bargain find.
About £6 inc post

I bought the BMW LED's, and cable that BMW supplies, some time ago, but because of summer daylight hours and the lack of need for lights at this time of year I haven't got round to fitting them. My inertia has been mainly due to looking around for these male connectors to avoid cutting the loom for the existing aux lights.

dont know if its the same CREE lights as being discussed here but I bought a pair from bikevis.com, very good for being visible and I think they now have an improved mk2 version, they also have a lot of other lighting type stuff

So ... Why do you spose BMW put a non compatible fitting on: the LED

Do they know something we don't:nenau

Do they know something we don't

If you work it out let me know!:D

It's connecting two wires. One positive, one negative. No other mods to the circuitary needed. If they'd brought out a special adaptor/cable and charged us fifty quid for it I'd understand, but nothing.:nenau

Your guy's right. You need the specific lead that is made for the LED lights, but the male H11 means you can fit it to the other end of the specific lead and plug it straight into the existing female socket on the old aux light loom.

The whole point - no need to cut the existing loom. BuMW dealers can't see further than their microfische screens I'm afraid:D

Okay - so the plugs turned up from Singapore today and I've soldered them onto the cables for the BMW LED's. All seems to work okay and here are a couple of shots of the aux lights first and then the LED's.

Frankly, in terms of shere light there isnt a lot of difference. However, the LED's have that whiteness about them but most importantly - and the main reason I decided to change, have a much more defined beam of light especially at the periphery which is where I wanted it (living in the ar5e end of nowhere, where you spend a lot of time on dark country lanes, to have the verge and hedgerow well lit is very useful!):thumb

Hope this is useful!

I have tried those bulbs.... they are bright enough - but once fitted to the spotlight I found that 1/2 of them sits outside the light reflector - and therefore does not work. If you compare it next to the H-11 bulb you'll see the difference..

Yes - the problem is the lense on the standard aux lights - it just scatters anything you put through it and are really of no visual benefit. I'd been running 35W HID's previously and whilst it made the aux lights brighter it just sent the light everywhere, with little benefit, and over a very short distance.

This is much better defined and reduces the risk of dazzling oncoming vehicles.
