Just read the thread about cleaning the 1200's brakes and it got me thinking it's time I changed the fluid in my 05 servo braked bike.

Can I do this in much the same way as a conventional bike. Or is it more complicated, and needs special tools/fluids etc???

Val.

It's normal brake fluid, dot 4.

it's significantly more complicated than a non servo bike but can be done fairly easily and quickly as long as you are careful to avoid sucking air into the system and doesn't explicitly need special tools to do a basic job (to do the full job properly a service tool like the 911 is used to talk to the computer and tell it open valves and stuff) However, the basic process is well described over on avdrider and allows the majority of the fluid to be exchanged. There's plenty of threads on the subject if you do a search which will point you in the direction of comprehensive how-to guides

On the BMW servo systems you should change the fluid every year to keep it clean and functioning correctly. You really really don't want the system going down on you as you barrel downhill towards a hairpin bend.

So if your brake fluid hasn't been changed for a while, now would be a good time.

Hey up Val
Had the same thoughts as you with my 1150 servo bike
I had the fortune to have a good bloke from this site show me how its done
Not by the 17 page instructions that can be pulled off the net but by his experience and knowledge
Basically I kept the under seat reservoirs topped up whilst he bled the system, it empties very quickly, but was an easy job in general
Just go through it bit by bit and wait for the clean stuff coming through
Hope this gives confidence :thumb2

Just to clarify it's supposed to be every year for the wheel circuits and every two years for the control circuits.

So, perhaps I should look into sorting mine as nothing's been done since 2005? This might explain a few skid marks, pun intended.

Just about to do mine!
Have manufactured a filler tool much the same as JVB instructions (spare cap and a 100ml syringe from Ebay).

Many thank for your replies guys.

Looks like I'll be having an interesting couple of hours in the garage :( :blast   :jager:jager:jager :thumb2

Cheers Val.
