HAve any of you chaps ridden the 1100S. I've got one and think I might like to change to the GS as I really like the layout and look. ( Though I do think the S is gorgeous ;) )

Anyone give a comparative run down ? As I understand it the 1150 is approx 10-15 hp down on the S but more importantly I'm not sure what the Torque comparisons are like, and to me that's what counts. I'm not one for dicking about with fueling any more, been there, done that. But will I notice a big drop in drive between the S and the GS ??? I'm not a boy racer I like to make good progress in the real world ( IAM member ) and the S does that well I don't want to ride around with my arse above my head unable to see on the road. The S is great but I suspect a GS would be better for the wife.

Hopefully you can give me some feedback on that prior to organising a test ride

Hi there,

I've never owned an r1100s but a friend had a standard one and now has a Randy Mamola boxer cup and I've ridden both fairly extensively I've got an r1150gs. The s is faster than the GS by about 20 MPH 120-125 on the clock v's 140-5 on the s. The acceleration on the S is a lot better than the gs. The boxer cup (twinspark bike) felt faster than the standard s. There are a lot more vibes from the S the GS its much smoother. GS is better on bumpy roads comfort wise cos of the longer suspension travel. The S is better in fast 100mph+ sweepers were the GS wallows a bit. l Did 1200 miles in Scotland with my missus on the back of the GS she thought it was very comfy but my other main bike is a GSXR600 :D Maintenance wise the GS is much easier to work on than the s especially access to the air filter its just under the seat on the GS but you've to take all the bodywork off on an S to get at it. Overall the GS is smoother than the S handles better on tight bumpy roads and is good fun to ride slowly as well. Its probably slightly more comfy for rider and pillion as well. TAnk range is about 30/40 miles more on the GS cos its got a 22 LTR tank instead of 18. Hope this helps a bit.

What are you waiting for?

I part ex-ed my 1100s against my GS. Have never looked back the GS is so much easier to ride, no wrist ache of neck ache trying so see where your going. You are more upright on the bike so the riding position is more relaxed and you can see over the tops of the cars drivers around you. Can do hundreds of miles in a day and still walk the next morning, the missus loves the thing (and the bike!!!).
Had a 1100s as a loan bike today as mine was in having the fork brace replaced under warranty, hated every minute of the commute to work.... thing was twitchy and felt like it was going to go over on every bend... Also the bike only had 3.4k miles on the clock and the back tyre was shagged!! Got 12K out my last set of tyres on the GS. Mark :0)

My mates got a standard 03 twinspark R1100S, it's good for 240kmh, against the Adventures 200kmh, in the real twisty stuff the Adventure leaves it behind but on long snaky roads they duel well.
Biggest difference is that when we get back from a days riding my mate gets off and collapses!

Seadog - I'm in the same position -I have the 04 Boxer cup Rep - and love the styling and the speed - just been to Ireland for a long eekend and loved the bike but the wrist ache and the vibration etc, along with the mirrors being useless between 3k - 4.5k revs means I'm looking to a possible swap to the GS or the 1200RT (New one out at Nov motorcycle show). Keep me informed how you get on!
Thanks
Ken
