Changing front brake pads

I'm going to change my front brake pads this weekend. The guy from the local Motorrad dealer showed me how a few weeks ago. However I can't remember how he pushed in the cailper pistons apart? I think it was just by hand but can't remember.

Also, he did not clean or grease anything - just popped the new pads in and refitted the pins, etc. Should it clean inside the calipers? Grease the back of the pads? What is the best advice?
