Hi. Regarding the above. I've following previous instructs but can't remove the oil seal. I'm using a screw driver, as suggested in the Hayes manual, as I haven't got the correct tool, but there is no way the thing will come out. I can't remove the slider from the bridge, which makes it more awkward, even after socking over night with penetating oil. Any suggestion please? can I cut the seal out?

There is a steptoe "sticky" on this try a search and you should find something to help.

A 'LARGE' flat blade screwdriver and use a small block of wood on the tube rim to protect it then press down 'HARD'. :thumb2
BTW, why can't you get the slider out?

Can't get tbe bolts to move which hold the slider to the bridge. Put plenty of oil on them over night and have been hitting the spaner with a hammer, with no move. Everything on this bike is either hard to get at and or locked solid! I've followed Steptoes info and it's really good but the seal is solid. I've been focing it with a flat screwdriver but feel that something is going to break. Any ideas please?

I did this job on an R850R a couple of weeks ago. The seal was very reluctant to move. Lots of lube and a good jar with a large socket. Then with a loooooong screwdriver and a bit of packing to prevent damage to the top of the leg I levered away. It didn't come loose immediately but I worked my way round the seal and out it came..took a fair bit of force though. The leg had been used without oil in it so the bush under the washer was replaced. This along with the washer was corroded in place. We also found that a cheap pair of universal gaiters fitted perfectly.

You could try some heat from a hot air gun on the bolts for the slider, they have probably been loctited and from the sound of it the wrong one used. Heat may help to remove the seal as well??

Forks seal

Hi all, thanks to everyone for their suggestions. Great help. Finally, with brute force and a little swearing, removed old seal, repalced new one, ready to go. Thanks. Great site.
