Hi.

I need to change the RHS engine cover as it's got a few marks and corrosion on it. I have tried sorting it out on the bike but I need to take it off the bike to either swap it with a second hand unit or make good.

If I am just taking the RHS cover off this Rotax engine do I need to drop the oil as it looks like it just houses the rotor and generator from the service manual?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Lay it on its LHS and you'll definitely be fine It may be ok on the sidestand.

I reckon it will be fine on sidestand or centrestand.

The oil is in the sump below bottom-end level on a rotating engine.

Thanks guys, any things to look out for?

If I change it for a second hand cover I just need to swap the stator coil over?

Rotax is a dry sump- oil should be in the oil tank! Lay it on the opposite side and it should be fine. Just don't try this when changing the clutch cover.

It is a dry sump engine but I don't think my oil header tank holds in excess of the 2 litres of oil needed to fill the engine!

You may need a new gasket but that's pretty much it. The clutch side is a whole different kettle of fish.....

Hiya. Motorworks have let me down, the cover they have is not in any better shape than mine. So I will take the existing off the bike fill it with 'liquid metal, sand smooth and paint. The G650 has a darker anthracite colour than the f650. Any ideas of what colour it actually is and where to get from?

I did get a hycote grey/silver high temp paint after reading a forum on f650 engine paint it's s completely different shade though. So I will use this as a 'primer' then get this darker grey colour from somewhere local I guess?

Hammerite smooth silver is a closer match. I've also used the hycote in the past with the same disappointing match. Make sure you get all of the corrosion off before priming.

You're probably right, the rest will be hidden in the gearbox, so shouldn't cause a problem when removing the stator cover.

Stator cover.

I've only delved into this side of the engine once, but i seem to remember an annoying washer that sits on one of the idler shafts for the starter motor falling out, and i had no idea where it came from (until i consulted the parts fiche).

This might have been while removing the second casing, and not just the stator cover on a G650 though....

@Dansin - That Hammerite smooth silver still looks very light in colour. Have you tried it on the G650 covers before?

Thanks
