My GS has developed a slight leak from the rear bevel box. The general concensus seems to point to the pinion seal. Is there anything I need to watch out for when changing the seal? Does anyone know of any info/diagrams that may be available to assist me?
Had the same problem on my R100GS and after ordering the seal and asking whether I need special tools etc from Motorworks only took it off to find I do need a pipe socket of some sort to undo the locking nut in front of the seal to change it. Eventually took the bevel drive to the nearest mechanic(was Bracken at the point) and they changed the seal for £25.
Don't know if the bigger 1100/1150's is the same but up to date could not find any technical information regarding the strip/assemble of the bevel box. I still have my self destructed 1100 bevel box and can have a look with some piccies tonight how it all seems to fit together.
hi...mine leaks too.....was informed it wasnt a problem by one dealer whom i shall remain nameless (before Greg gets on my back).
as i understand it, there is a specific tool for releasing the area where you have the problem....i only know this because my local mechanic looked at it and realised the score. good luck on this, if you find out different please tell me!
Being mechanically challenged, short of time and a lazy git I paid Balderstons £128 to do it at my last service (18k). A bit disappointed that it failed so early but still cheaper than a chain and sprocket kit.
FYI two parts were replaced - the seal and a threaded/press ring (?). The metal part apparently corrodes/rusts preventing the rubber making a good seal. I've also heard that the new seal takes time to bed in but mine was good straight away.
It may not be a problem but I didn't fancy the dripping oil getting onto the rear disc and contaminating the pads.
