I currently have a 2015 GSA which has a Nav 5 and full luggage and I'm contemplating upgrading to a new Triple Black. My dilemma which may be a deal breaker is in relation to moving the Nav 5 and luggage across to the new bike....

Nav 5... is it completely transferable across to the new bike with no issues or glitches? How does it work with the old info contained within it etc? The new bike will have TFT if it makes any difference.

Luggage... My concern is with the locks. I guess its not cheap to replace the locks to match the new bike so could I retain a key from the old bike and get copies made without the transponder or whatever its called or just keep the old key and hand back just one to the dealer? The new bike I guess will have "keyless" ignition if this makes a difference?

Sorry for the basic questions but in my defence I tend to just ride the bike without knowing much about the technical side :(

Nav 5 - no issues to transfer over. You could erase bike data on the device if you wanted to make a fresh start but I don’t as I share it across two bikes.
Locks - they’re codeable, as long as you ensure the panniers are unlocked you should be able to remove the locks and recode them to the new bike key. Ask a dealer if not sure - check YT video on recording locks. Note that with 6 lock barrels and 3 different types of wafer in the barrel (not including the locking water which transfers across), you may need to beg extra wafers off a dealer (1 needed 3x “2” wafers when I recorded my GS luggage).
Dealer will want all keys back if you trade in - but they would normally throw in recoding the locks for free if you buy a new bike?

Your Nav 5 will just mount onto your new bike.

Maybe do a reset.

Leave the locks on the boxes open after you take them off the bike and the can be coded to your new key without any trouble. Your keyless bike will come with a key.

Thanks for replies guys.... dealer wanted nearly £300 to "change" the locks hence my concerns.

Find a local independent.......probably just cost you the time it takes to do + a few bob for the wafers.

Someone off the forum local to you might do it for you in return for a bit of lunch, a natter and a coffee

That’s taking the mickey, I had a dealer do it for free whilst I waited.... tell them it’s a deal breaker and recoding the locks is part of the deal....

It certainly is a deal breaker and I wont repeat what my wife said when I told her ;)

A friend of mine went from a -14 GS to a 18 GSA, and he brought his NAV V along to the new bike. As far as I understand, it works within the limitations of the NAV V.

As for bringing the cases along and rekey them:
The original locks are not meant for rekeying, but you may order locks that are rekeyable at a reasonable price. These locks comes with a selection of plates, and the dealers (at least my dealer has) have a case with all the different plates, so even if the plates that come with the key does not fit your key, there will be plates that do fit.
Also, the dealer might be interested in the locks that you pull out of your cases (and thus be extra helpful) as these will be useful to the person that purchases you "old" bike.

It strikes me that £300 is likely to be the price for supplying & fitting new locks rather than the time involved in recoding your existing ones. Even if this is 'their' charge for recoding it still sounds like a price a halfwit salesman pulled out of thin air rather than something based on fact driven by BMW's own workshop times

If they are prepared to stiff over the recoding of some locks I wonder how far they pulled your pants down over your part exchange?

It’s so easy to change the “coding”on the locks it is untrue. Have a search on YouTube for a video showing how to do it. Even if you don’t fancy doing it yourself it’s worth watching just to how easy and uncomplicated the process actually is!

I coded the lock on my gsa top box in about 5 minutes. The first one you do takes a little while to figure out the order of the plates but if you write it down you can do subsequent locks in seconds.

The nav5 moves with no problem whatsoever.

Go get that new bike!

In order to recode a lock you have to pry off the front bezel and put it back on again. It's indeed doable, but I did not mention it since the guy is buying a brand new bike, and he has to do 8 locks ( 3 + 3 + 2), and the chances are his existing plates will not fit so he well be stuck with a half-ass solution with perhaps only one or two fitting plates in each lock and a partly bent bezel in front of the lock. Potentially lots of efforts for potentially half ass result only to save a lousy £300....

But off course, if the PO lives under a bridge, I can see the point...

Takes about 5 mins per lock to do it yourself

There’s how to videos on YouTube

As many have already said. Get your dealer to recode your old barrels to a new bike key (FOC, part of the deal) and if I were you, I would blag my way to get a new NAV VI free of charge as part of the deal, reason being that new NAV has better screen, more up to date features, that should in theory work better with TFT screen etc. But main reason being that NAV V is no longer being supported by Garmin for new software updates. In fact it been reported that latest NAV V software release made it slower to work.

So to sum up:

Locks coded and NAV VI FOC as part of the deal.

To code lock takes an experienced tech no longer than 20 to do the lot. That about £30 in labour charges including VAT. Nav cost £675. So if a dealer wants to loose sale over £700 worth of freebies, it is their loss. You can always ring around for a better deal and get your dealer to match it should they want your business.

It you manage to get it, then you should be able to get £250-£300 for your NAV V on a popular auction site. That way you in affect saved your self £1000 on a new

Good luck.

Ha... the Devon name gave away my location but no not Ocean on this occasion....

OP, appreciate you are in Devon and you don't mention about whether your going brand new or used. However, if its brand new I would strongly urge you to make contact with Vines of Guildford! Appreciate, its a long trek, however, after purchasing two (2) bikes from them and recently being in to see they have two (2) brand new unregistered GSA TB fully kitted with aluminium luggage, nav 6 and Akra with an impressive saving its worth a thought.

*Not paid, but as I've done before I'd rather see the rest of the forum save money than get robbed by a dealer like the coded lock situation here!*
