The Lost WWI Bunker: A Time Team Special

Can't find a decent link about it, but they dig somewhere on the Somme

I'm certain that they did something similar when Yorkshire Trench dug-out was excavated, is this a repeat of that?

Clive,

It seems that this excavation is the one the cafe owner near Polygon Wood told us about and showed us his photo's of.

I wonder if they'll cover the identification of the two brothers whose bodies were found?

I want to go back there now and spend a couple more days having a better look around with out having to think about keeping a 12 year old happy.

Jim,

If you do go, it's worth visiting Johan's cafe near Polygon Wood. He does a decent breakfast and will let you browse his photo album's of the dig.

Ryan's link (above) has a reference to a recent find. Three bodies uncovered when some road work was done nearby.

I don't think any of us quite understood the level of preservation that Johan told us about, until he showed us the photo's.

It turns out that two of the dead were brothers, the elder died in his younger brothers arms before the younger died too.

Worth remembering that he also told us that he'd be happy for us to camp there if we ever wanted to.

I see that they have been back down the bunker over the last 4 or 5 days. I will have a better read tomorrow. Looks interesting.

Thanks Mike I'll do that should I find myself over there again next year.
As I said when I took Euan in Easter I had to be mindfull not to over do it or the whole experience wouldn't have been that much fun for him and it certainly wouldn't have left the impression on him that it did.

If anyone else is thinking of taking a youngster over there I would really recommend it. Euan knew a little of WW1 from school although they are not covering fully for another year. I just noticed how intently he watched a programme on telly a year ago and then mentioned how his Great great uncle was buried over there. We then found him on CWGC site and went to find him. Just two days in Ypres was enough for Euan and we visited Tyne cot, Flanders fields Museum, Menim Gate etc and he was well chuffed when it was him that found the grave we were looking for. The B&B recommended elsewhere on the site (cant remember the name at the moment) is in Ypres, really nice and a great base.
