Charcoal cannister removal?

Anybody done the "cannisterectomy" deal on an R12GS?

The reason I ask is I need to remove the cannister on my bike in order to fit a Wilber's shock on the rear. The Wilbers reservoir and hi/low compression adjustment stick out on the left and the shock won't fit without removing the cannister. I'd really rather not remove it, but I guess I gotta...

I checked the REP-ROM CD and it makes no mention (that I can find) of the charcoal cannister or how it's plumbed and wired. It looks like it may be pretty similar to the cannister on the R11xxGS'es (I've done a couple of those and know the drill), but I have to pull off more bodywork to trace the hoses and find the solenoid.

I'm also worried that the main computer will detect that the cannister/solenoid aren't there anymore and throw a fault and or decide to run the engine in some sort of "limp home" mode, thus screwing up performance.

Maybe this is only an issue for USA-spec bikes...

I think you may find it is!

Something to do with emission control I believe, ironic really bearing in mind the US Govt. attitude to the Kyoto Treaty!

I figured out how to remove the charcoal canister (and coincidently how to spell the word 'canister'). I wrote up a Webpage with photos for the other USA-spec bike owners who want to do the same.

It's necessary to remove the canister to install Wilbers or Bitubo rear shocks. Might be necessary for other aftermarket brands too, but I'm not sure about that.

And YES, it is ironic that the USA-spec bikes have this bit of 'environmentally correct' hardware, while our government won't sign the Kyoto Treaty. On behalf of the 230+ million US citizens and illegal immigrants who didn't vote for Bush, I apologize for that inconsistancy. :)

(okay, admitedly most of those 230+ million people weren't elligible to vote, but I like the perspective it offers)
