Charger.

it doesnt say can bus compatable does it,so you would have to wire this straight to the batt for this to work, but you knew that already didnt you after doing a search on here for the numerous what battery charger is suitable for my can bus equipped 1200 threads:blast

And when it's time to clip the crocs onto the battery, the threads on "How do I get the effing front seat off?" are handy too.

Stick to proven technology, use an Optimate 4 dual programme or the BMW equivalent. You know there will be no problems then.

just install directly to the battery mate, forget the canbus bollocks then, it's no hardship, I'm using an ancient datatool optimate clone, and it's fine, I have the fly lead connected to the battery, and that has it's connector cable tied to the frame .... sorted.

No need for canbus / accessory socket chargers :)

Each person has a VALID opinion, but here's my 2cents and I ride all over, all of the time and all of the year, so your MORE likely to come across someone like me who will pull up when needed. Just ask the guys from Matlock if I see someone standing by their bike I'm there and fixing the bugger or offering to give someone a lift to the local petrol station if I'm not carrying any juice.

Go for the OPTIMATE 4 Dual, use the supplied lead to connect it to your battery and charge your battery, no fuffing about and losing those little bolts on the bottom of your battery screws when your pulling and pushing the battery back in to place. Plus if your like me you have the Horn and Autocom upgrades on your bike, so no re-running wires or snagging the bloody things.

Now that your battery's charged and fine, leave the lead in place BECAUSE when your battery dies whilst your out and about (yes it happens) and someone like me pulls up and has the OPTIMATE battey jumper lead there's no faffing about as I can connect the leads and give you a jump.

Like I said everyone does things differently I don't carry JUMP LEADS as they are bulky and heavy for 12v batteries BUT I do carry the bike to bike lead as it's small and weighs nothing.

So it's your choice let us know which option you choose.

What's the Optimate jump lead? Sounds like a useful thing to carry around. I use an Optimate 4 plugged direct into the standard accessory socket, no extra wiring involved. Nippy Norman had a good offer on last year.

Ok im looking to buy a new charger, and my question is if i replace the crocodile clips on the one listed below can i plug it straight into the accessory socket to leave bike on "trickle" charge ? Is it canbus safe or are is there a better ctek one ? cheers, Del

I fitted a socket wired direct to battery which you can plug you charger into and also gives a socket not through the can bus to plug a compressor or anything else which draws more than 5 amps.

Which is what I do to after some advice and searching around on here. :D

Im thinking i will go down this route as well, as you say direct to the battery allows the use of a small portable compressor, which i do have, along with the ability to use any other device. Now to decide on the charger.................:blast

That setup really worked for me last year on the way back down from Inverness mate, had a puncture and plugged in an accessory lead to the charger plug straight from the battery, the compressor which I took from the boot of my car for the trip (Nice and Small VW/Skoda one from the tyre repair kit). Had it plugged and inflated in no time at all and was back on my way.

I have got an old datatool optimate clone, and I bought a new Oxford Optimizer that I'm using now (The datatool does the car when I'm away in Winter) and as it's going direct to the battery, it seems to do the job and was only £20 from the local dealer in Warrington.

LIDL have a charger in for £13 ATM. Apparently it's a re-badged CTEK charger.

Aye i went and had a look last week but it wasnt in stock at the time, i might go and have a look again. I have two Tronic TX chargers that came from them. Made in Germany i think. Where is the Ctek made any idea?

whats wrong with using ine of them for the bike del ?:augie

Probably nothing TBH, but im not convinced they are working properly. I had my battery on charge for two weeks and it still didnt start the bike, so im not sure if its the battery or the charger thats wrong, although i suspect its the battery.I might just bite the bullet and get a new battery but the bike is due a service by the dealer and since its only done 250 miles since i bought it in November i reckon they should replace it as the bike has a years warranty.

I'm sure they would in those circumstances, I'd whip it out and get round somewhere and get it tested.
I bought a gs previously from dawn sarf and they assured me the tyres were "brand new" turned out only the rear was new and front was just on the limit for BMW approved spec, sent them a letter with the receipt for new tyre and they happily posted me a cheque.
good luck matey:thumb

I bought it from Clarks of Dundee, and although the bike had only done 170 miles since its previous service some 10 months earlier, the deal was it would be serviced and the book stamped (it was due its annual service) which it wasnt :blast So ive spoken to them and they are going to get it picked up and taken to the dealership for servicing. I dont know whether or not they will stand good for the battery or not TBH :D but i would hope so if they want any repeat business from me.
