we've been thinking about taking a laptop with us and because 99% of the time we'll be camping we'll need to be able to charge it off the bike. I was thinking of installing a cigarette lighter, but not sure how i would be able to run the laptop off the plug. any ideas?

Maplins.....you can either buy a brand-specific 12v charger, or a kit with variable voltage and plug ends to charge from a 12v socket.

If you have a BWM type sicket, you'll need a 12v car to 12v din adaptor (about 6 quid) but if not, again Maplins sell them, either in the car type or Din type.

(The Din type don't push out on bumpy bits)

All you need is a 12v to 240v invertor from Halfords - though personally I find a Garmin a better solution as strapping a laptop to the handlebars can be a bit of a bugg@r:)
