As far as I know this is not possible, but does anyone know of suitably voltage regulated device with a USB connector that I could graft onto the Quest's AC charging cradle and thus charge my GPS from a laptop? Or would the draw be too much for a USB port?

As far I recall, its not possible.

The Vreg chipset charging current (from memory with QPAC) is 1.1amp (flat battery ~ boost charge), falling away to 700mA (normal) and 200mA (trickle)

The Quest doesn't take power from USB, only the contacts on the back.

Edit; Just re-read the OP.... I see by using the mains cradle you could achieve what you're aiming at however, I think USB is limited to 500mA, so according to RAM-man you'd be over that on normal charge anyway.
