HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP Please,

I do not possses a BMW battery charger so I cannot charge my 05 1200GS via the accessory socket. I do have a car accessory socket directly wired to the battery protected by a 5 amp fuse.

Can I use a normal battery charger via this accessory socket to charge the battery? I do not want to fry the can-bus system.

thanks

Neill

Yes you can.
As its connected directly to the battery, it's got nothing to do with the Canbus system.

If its a butch battery charger, and your battery is particularly flat, then you may exceed 5 amps charging current. If in doubt, clip the charger directly onto the battery.
For top ups or trickle charge however the accessory socket will be fine.

Lead acid batteries should be charged at no more than 10% of capacity. 1.2 amps max for a 12AH battery.

The easiest option is to fit a charge connection to the battery to suit the charger. Optimate come with a connector in the box. They are also available from Maplin.
