Anyone have a sheddy 4x4 knocking about?

I've been talked into joining the local 4x4 rescue group, now need the vehicle. As it will be pressed into off road learning and local lanes dog car duties, the victim candidate vehicle will be well loved but I want to keep it at the cheap end.

Something like an early Rav4, pinin, pajero, Jimny would be about right.

Ideally located within a reasonable distance from SE Wales.

Early auto Freelander 2 worth looking at too

Best car I've ever owned.
You were lucky.
Ours was nothing but trouble. Engine, electrics mainly.
Loved the ride, the room, the comfort, but the problems and niggles forced us to drop it unfortunately.

I've heard stories on both sides.

Funny timing, but I just got home with a Fiat Panda cross and taking it to a quarry tomorrow to see how plucky it is. Big fan so far, it's so whimsical

Hugely underrated car.
Take notice of the rear propshaft though.
Known issue with them which shows once nicely hot and seems as if the ignition is cutting out under load. Took fiat ages to diagnose it but then now an easy thing to replicate under test.
More prevalent in the twin air.

Thanks, the propshaft and rear subframe have been sorted on this one so hopefully some good miles left in it yet!

Had our 2012 Freelander 2 from near new, 2.2 diesel manual gearbox XS model, did 183k with only regular maintenance, the odd bulb and central locking and electric window issues, which were sorted under warranty, plus a drive shaft at 170k. I believe it is now a farm truck somewhere in Banff, Scotland. The key is looking after them well and not skimping on a maintenance, finding one with good history and condition is increasingly difficult as they get older, the newest ones now 10 years old.

Im all the way with you there. My current Freelander 2 (2010) is now at 250k, fully serviced its whole life and still runs like its new. Yes the odd scratch here and there but its a freelander not a showboat ;). My last one I got from a dealer and oh boy what a crock of s@£t that was with no end of problems. Great motors if you manage to get a looked after one like you said.

That Subaru fs at 3k on the forum would be a good buy more than enough for lanes

Your post might be either good timing or a bad omen? I've just come back from a longish drive (80 miles or so) mostly on the motorway at a fairly consistent 55mph (perhaps a peak of 60) and all of a sudden my 2006 Fiat Panda 4x4 1.2L petrol just started to feel like there was something dragging, or very little power. I made my way onto the hard shoulder (fortunately there was one) and as I stopped various warning lights came on (I now wish I'd had the foresight to take a picture)!

I turned the key off, left it a few seconds and then restarted. It then ran ok for another 5 or 6 miles in the motorway at about 45 to 50mph to my proper exit junction.

I don't suppose anyone could point me in the right direction to get a better understanding of what might actually be wrong?

I' don't want to take it to Fiat as the last time it was there they wanted to replace my rear wheel bearings for what turned out to be a dragging brake pad!

Sorry to hear that! If not Fiat, some mechanic with a diag tool. Might be a bad coil or spark plug?

Good morning,

What are you looking to spend?

I have an Ex-Mil LR 90 (it belonged to the RAF - so hasn't worked hard) up for grabs.

It is a 1987 vintage 90, with a 200TDi conversion...

I am based in Carmarthenshire
DM me if you would like to chat.

Freelander? Really?
Got my transit dog van stuck in a field on a job so went to farmer to borrow a tractor to pull it out.
Instead he brought his then new Freelander 2 with road tyres on and it pulled a transit van that was in as far as the sills straight out and across the field to solid ground .

Very capable machine when everything works!
I really liked ours, but the niggles and breakdowns meant it had to go.

Just closing this thread as I have found a daft little thing to bounce around in for the moment.markup_1000018717 (1).jpg

We used Panda 4x4 for emergency home visits in rural Derbyshire in the 2000's.
They took some stick and coped with this quite well.
The big guns usd Discos, not sure who had more fun.
