I have Tom Tom on my iPhone 6+. Works grand for me. Why carry/have more devices than nescessary? JJH

Tbh, she hasnt got a smartphone or phone with a contract so she needs a device or some type

Get her a smart phone then, you don't need a contract, something like navmii is free to download and works well, it doesnt need any data connection, I run it on a used £100 iPhone 5 on pay as you go, and never use my garmin any more, except on the bike, other than that any sat nav that doesn't look too cheap will do!

she has a phone from Poland still but because of roaming doesn't have a UK sim or contract or anything as she only uses this in the house on wifi. I just checked googlemaps for directions and if I switched off wifi it didn't work for route planning. ALSO, with say navmii, does this offer lane assist and things or just basic directions? I ask only as she is new to driving so think some visual aids may help at the beginning - cheers

I don't think it has lane assist, but there will be others that do, though you may have to pay a couple of pound for, it's very easy to use, and can search by address or postcode, my own Iphone is EE pay as you go, but I mostly use wifi or I messages, so my credit lasts a long time, the sat nav does chew through the battery, so it needs to be plugged in!

Cheers - just weird that when i turn off wifi or cell it (googlemaps) doesnt work at all - i thought it did and i recall using it on my iphone when overseas without having any data or wifi?

Hopefully this will be a bot more useful than whats been posted so far.

I have just bought my parents a garmin nuvi 55LM from Halfords, they have a deal on at the moment from £99 to £69. 5" display, lifetime maps, lane assist / junction displays, easy search. It doesn't have Bluetooth or mp3 player or chip fryer so its easy to use. HTH.

Thanks! This was the kind of cash i was looking to spend if i went for a device so appreciate this recommendation!

Any Garmin Nuvi is well worth it. We just got this one - slightly larger screen and lifetime maps update - but you can go down to under £100. Easy to use and good route logic.

+1 for the 55LM got mine for £60 best investment since I hit the ground in the UK

Saw the nuvi 57 for the same price in argos today - cant seem to see what the differences are - is that the better model though?

Download "Sygic" to your smartphone it's FREE just need to pay for some extras if you want them!!
It's based on Tom Tom doesn't use any of your data
