Speedferries.com

Just booked for Sept 5th outward and 20th return Dover to Boulogne, car + up to 6 pax, they have a " fight the pirates " offer on all summer, 50,000 tickets at this price.

Outward £19

Return £15

Total £34, YES you read it right £ 34 return.

I like this Danish fella, Curt.

Thanks to speedferries the others especially P&O have had to reduce their 'stupid' prices.I think people had enough before Speedferries came along and were using the cheap airlines and leaving their car at home.I think P&O now realise we just want to get accross that bit of water as cheaply and quickly as possible and are not interested in spending a fortune in Starbucks type coffee bars.
I think it cost me £400 last year for 2 and bike one way on that Portsmouth to Bilbao crossing .36 hours ! apparently does it in 24 coming back.More spending time at the bar and cost of another meal out of you.
Shame jobs had to go here in Dover but it has to be down to poor management at the end of the day.

Tunnel in Winter (if price is cheap enough...avoid cancelled ferries due to weather) but definately Spedferries in Spring/Summer/Autumn. Car and trailer at Easter....£88 return. Car alone in Six weeks hols £30 return (selected sailings but suit us in any case)

hrumph...

:( now if you could find me a cheaper way of getting from Ireland to France - i would be most grateful.

€680 return, for bike and me and Mrs Og,inc. cabin, high season (July)...
ARGGHHHHhhhhhh!
i'm beginning to think it may be worth sussing out going TO Spain and RETURNING via France.....maybe.
i want to spend my hard earned THERE not GETTING there!
Og.

I looked at these guys but they're very restricted in sailing times which doesn't fit in with our plans. They also use those catamaran thingies which (unless they've improved) can't run in bad weather and I've found them pretty :barf in all but the calmest conditions :D

Cheap though!

prices

I have just canceled my Harwich to Hook crossing for my car and trailer=£380 and changed to speedferries =£66 a saving of £314 which will pay for my fuel and camping for the 10 days.Ok I have got the 130 mile drag to Dover, but when we are talking hundreds
of pounds it's got to be done.Andy :D :D

I,ve booked today to go to France on Monday next, car and four passengers £88 return with SeaFrance. Tunnel was £223. Just hope Calais sorted out by then! 22 miles at £4 a mile is enough to pay. There is no logic to the pricing structures and although I travel 5/6 times the year I have to shop around each time for the best prices.

Andy

Bloody hell what a saving, just makes you think how much profit the ferries are really making, not from us though.

Well Done.

Seafrance use a different loading ramp and apparently aren't affected by the current "difficulties".

Knew it was too good to be true, the French seamen are on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday 22/23 March. Seafrance contacted me by e mail and had to reschedule to Thursday. Luckily I can reschedule and havn't booked any hotels on the way down south.

I am told this will cause major problems this week with ferries.

Well this was my first experience with SpeedFerries and I probably won't be travelling with them again. The attached image shows just how closely they like to have their customers park their cars.

For years I've been one of P&O's faithful - I loath the tunnel - and have always been happy with their slick service if not their rip-off pricing system, so we thought we'd give SpeedyFerries a go.

Apart from the price of £50 which was excellent, I didn't like the following -

a. We arrived in plenty of time but had to park amongst the cars rather than a dedicated motorcycle lane as with P&O. Just before the cars were allowed to proceed on board, we were asked to awkwardly filter between them to get on board first. Then mayhem broke out as the leading vehicles at the front of each queue decided it was time for them to go too.

b. Although there were white tops on the waves, we didn't expect the juddering, choppy crossing. Drinks glasses in the bars were chattering up and down the shelves and most people felt queezy.

c. At the end of our holiday we arrived back at Boulogne early in the hope of getting an earlier sailing but were turned away. In forty years of travelling with both Townsend-Thorenson and P&O, this had never happened to us before. We've often been half a day early or late and have always got on the next ferry.

d. Three motorcyclists were allowed on board first but there were still quite a number of cars getting off. The crew members were shouting instructions to each and everyone and amongst the echoeing din, it was difficult to find out where they wanted us to go. And on a wet, ribbed deck, that was no time to be unsure of ourselves.

e. As you can see, the parking was very poor, and they were obviously cramming everything on they could.

f. From memory, SpeedFerries only operate four outbound and four inbound sailing between Dover and Boulogne, so no wonder they are so full.

Our conclusions are that we will stay will P&O as this is a comfortable beginning and end to our holidays, although it is a pain that they can't or won't do anything with their cranky pricing policy.

Stop whining Paul. If you want a cheap crossing that's what Speed ferries provides.

You book your crossings and take them - if you want an earlier return you take pot luck but as they're so cheap they will most likely be fully booked. If you want flexibility pay extra with P&O or Eurotunnel.

As for the tie down process, I can't fault them. Easily as good, if not better, than P&O. The deck hands I encountered knew exactly what was required.

Having said that we will probably use Eurotunnel again, mainly for the faster crossing and flexibility on return but if you want an economy channel crossing they can't be faulted and if I ever take the car they'll be top of the list - beat the pirates :D

Adam :)

Yes Adam, there were an awful lot of whiners with people feeling sick and others almost having to walk over the bonnets of cars to reach there's. Nope, it's back to P&O for me next month, for the Elfstedentocht rally on Holland.

santander or chunnel

I was looking to take the car to santander for a three week break in southern france/northern spain, £1200 for 3 of us :yikes.

so have decided to go a day earlier by tunnel £105 and drive through france.

Why ferry, when you can EuroTunnel?

All this talk of a great deal.... £60-70 for your ferry crossings....

guys guys guys... Eurotunnel is costing me just £52 return for me, passenger and my bike... and nice simple 30 min crossing...

can't beat that for excellent... (in my opinion anyway)

Don't like to say I told you so but in my earlier post ......"I looked at these guys but they're very restricted in sailing times which doesn't fit in with our plans. They also use those catamaran thingies which (unless they've improved) can't run in bad weather and I've found them pretty bad in all but the calmest conditions" :D

swebb, the reason we took the ferry was because Eurotunnel wanted silly money when we booked. They must have dropped their prices quite a bit.

Also tbh I'd rather pay the extra and go Seafrance or P & O rather than Speedferries knowing I can turn up late or early and get on the next ferry.

BTW last year one of our party was quite ill and we came back a day early for the tunnel and they charged us a £30 "admin" fee.

Cheers

Dick
