After buying a new GS1250 i now have Givi panniers from my XR which are no longer suitable so my question is what is my cheapest option for a couple of long weekends away with my boy. Buying new panniers doesn't really make sense for a once a year trip. I will still use my 48ltr top box (which i like to keep for gloves tankbag etc when off the bike) but are there any soft luggage options worth considering? Not keen on backpacks either to be fair. Any suggestions greatly appreciated..

why aren't the Givi boxes suitable? I've been using the same E21 boxes on a Tracer, S1000XR and R1200RS since 2015.

There wasn't a Givi Monokey fitting kit for the RS but I bought an SW Motech one and a set of their Givi adapters.

If you want really affordable throw overs you’ll not go far wrong with Lomo Bags.
RE Givi boxes, I use Givi Quick release pannier rails on my 21GS. Will fit any Monokey panniers. I have Trekkers and Alaska panniers.

This

Sounds like the best option :)

Thanks for the replies Gentlemen. I checked on Givi website and the only QR frame listed for the GS is the PLR5108 which is not compatible with my V37 boxes according to Givi even though the V37 is a monokey fitment. Looks similar mind you. Will check the SW Motech site and see what's listed for the GS.

Ahhh, yes V37s are not flat on the back like the normal cases are they. Yeah sorry, the racks i have wouldnt fit those.

Givi only do the V37 kit for my R1200RS and I already had the standard Monokey boxes. SW Motech to the rescue but I doubt they do "funny" adapters for the oddly shaped Vsystem.

I would flog the V37 boxes and buy some standard Monokey jobs from Kappa or Givi (plenty used on Ebay). The E21 are great as they are narrow and I use them with an E45 topbox for 2 weeks away.

Like the look of the Lomo bags but I would need some luggage racks to mount them to which seems to be an easy enough option but a bit of a faff to remove them at your destination once strapped on.
Anyone want to buy some as new V37 panniers !!!
Thanks again for all the useful comments..

Re the LOMO, I use seperate thin dry bags inside.

I strap them to the frames as in the video, then tie wrap them too.

With a bit of effort they can look very neat too if aesthetics are an issue.

On arrival, grab inners and gone.

Only risk is they are easy ish to steal I suppose, but never been an issue.

I'm about to get another set funnily enough as I sold mine............and instantly regretted it.

Hope you get sorted :okay

That's the way to do it! Buy a very expensive bike and look for the cheapest pannier options, should look shite.

+1 for Lomo throwovers. 2-up to Italy on the old Guzzi, mostly good weather, but the wet bit was very wet. Bags’ contents stayed completely dry. Plenty of room - a bag each for me & herself.

I think you’d need some kind of rack on the GS to stop them cooking on the exhaust or catching in the wheel. The suspension on the Guzzi kept them in line, and the exhausts are lower.

Spot on

I’d probably go for soft panniers that hold their shape better than the Lomo ones (yes, I have looked at a pair) but for once a year trips is it worth paying a lot extra?

Have a look at the offering from Enduristan or Kriega, they’ll cost more than double but you do get what you pay for.
