Cheapest Ohlins

K Tech in Coalville did me a pretty good deal. If you want cheap cheap wait for ebay to come up trumps.

monkeyboy, why Ohlins?

are you looking to make lots of adjustment? what do you want them to do?

there are other suspension manufacturers out there ya no.:nenau

Has anyone noticed that Ohlins have suddenly jumped in price. McCallens were about £436 for a 1100GS rear and this week they're asking £540!! Harris performance - the importers are £529.

Touratech are currently cheapest at £470 but everyone on here slags them off as being some kind of rip-off outfit. Am I missing something or is it just down to the exchange rate and I need to contact TT pretty quick?

Partly due to the exchange rate, also a change to the pricing structure to the dealers.

As were in recovery steel is going up as well.

TT price will only apply if they have one on the shelf, if they have to get it from the distributors the new price will apply. :blast

Dunno - what are the other options. I had some Technoflex on my R1100S and they were nice but I'm about to do another big trip (20k plus) and I will want to easily change preload etc for luggage and passengers possibly. If there are cheaper but worthy replacements then I'm game on. The Weiber (?) ones are just expensive as the Ohlins from what I've found and so are the newer WP ones.

Really I'd like to treat myself to something nice allied to the fact that my current shocks have done 65k hard miles and seem to have gone solid so need replacing before I go.

Well, I've finally gone and done it. Ordered the Ohlins rear from TT at £478 delivered. They had to order it in but the price was ok :D Kais and Harris performance never answered my e-mails so I've no idea where their prices were.

The cheapest Wilbers rear was £521 delivered - I know they're 'to order' but I figured I'm using the bike for average type riding so hopefully the Ohlins shouldn't be far out. .....And if I discover that I don't get on with the GS experience, (I've only ridden it half a mile - with no brakes) I can sell it on easily.

Full report somewhere around Easter (hopefully):clap

more money than sense me thinks:confused:
you have never even ridden the bike yet you buy ohlins???

to answer the original question, there are lots of top end suspension makers, it makes me wonder sometimes the real reason people change, seems style and name over function,

anyhoo

maxton (isle of man winning bikes run these)
nitron (BBC Top Gear choose Nitron suspension)
hyperpro (high end dutch makers)
WP (white power been around on the tracks for years)
Showa :augie
hagon
wilbers

did i really need to do this?? really how long have you been riding bikes? and you never ever heard of any of these?

well here you go

:thumb2

Steady on there big boy!

I've been riding for about 40 years since you ask. I bought the bike as a restoration project as it had been lying around for a couple of years. All the luggage - with liners, good tyres, overhauled transmission, recent clutch, spare wheels (fully polished) and a full BMW history for a grand. I figured on spending another grand to get it tidy and back on the road. Now tell me I can't get £2k for a tidy 1100gs with ohlins, new brakes, dealer history and an Mot.

I have heard of the other manufacturer's you mention. Never had much luck with Showa or Hagon and liked the feel of a mate's Yamaha with Ohlins.

Enough sense to spend money wisely methinks:toungincheek

No one ever wasted money on good suspension.

Ohlins would definitely be a good selling point on a bike I was looking at.

uncle dick, if you read what i put you will see that my comments regarding suspension were aimed at the original poster, monkeyboy... not yourself

whom i did comment on saying more money than sense especially buying before you try

ohlins on a yamaha what? if its a sports bike then they will act different to on a gs.

any aftermarket suspension, including the OEM is shite if you mess too much without knowing exactly what does what,
if you want to constantly fiddle about with it buy the much adjustable ohlins, if you know how you want it and only need it to suit just you and luggage, or you pillion and luggage, well thats only 3 settings, buy suspension that deals with that specific load and weight range.

Eh - been riding for a while including RTW, done 1600 miles in a day, 14.5k one particular month, and a daily 80 mile commute, so thanks for the help there anyway. I've got an R1100S in the garage with 150k on next to the GS with nearly 70k at the moment if you want to check.

I've had a variety of suspension, but the last time I bought some expensive Technoflex they didn't last that long and were a bugger to get rebuilt properly. The originals Showas can be rebuilt but from the ones I've seen (they might not be representative) they weren't made to be rebuilt and have had to been drilled to re-pressurise and look shit. Also, FYI WP have stopped making aftermarket shocks for the 1150GSA - do keep up -

Nitron - well yes, but their price isn't worth the risk that they will be around in a few years when I want them serviced, and I'm not sure I like the colour

You see - and it was mentioned just above - I'm shortly about to step out the door on a 2 1/2 month 20-25k trip in which I will be taking carrying various amounts of luggage and possibly intermittent pillion. Ohlins probably has the best world wide support (yes, there is a world outside Yorkshire) in case things go pete tong enroute so, as the prices for all the makes I've seen are similar I just thought I'd ask who did the best deals

So, thanks for your input.

you asked the question, i only asked why OHLINS !!
