This topic has been probably discussed before, but I failed to find it.

As we all probably agree, Eurotunnel is a rip-off. Interestingly, their one day return ticket is cheaper than single ticket (currently >£100 for single and £63 for one day return). Some folks claim, that the Eurotunnel company charges you extra if you dont complete the return journey. There was then a long discussion about whether it is legal/enforceable.

I haven't found anything about the obligation to do the return journey in Eurotunnel T&C, however I might have missed something. So, I want to check with people from this parish - what do you do/done in the past to make the crossing cheaper. Are you using the one day return tickets for single crossings?

We if you are bothered book it through a travel agent and then they dont have any details to bill do they!!!!

I use Team Coordin8 run by a lass that used to work for MotorSport Travel in the days when they were the only firm to book through, saved me £20 on a ferry ticket dropping it from 50 to 30 return, they to tunnel not so much of a saving but still some.

I think the Tunnel is bloody good value, got a couple of crossings booked for August and September about £70.00 rtn. Changed dates and times a couple of times now and all they charged is an extra fiver. How much do you think it should be?

I think the tunnel is great value. Ive arrived both early and late for my train but have still been allowed on the next one.

I dont agree with the OP on this

It might be a little more than a ferry but you pay for a little more convenience, I will not use the Dover ferry anymore, tunnel for me everytime.

When it goes well it is brilliant, have had a couple of long delays where I am sure they could have squeezed some bikes at the back of the trains.

One time we arrived a few minutes "early" but got stuck behind some twat who could not operate the check in machine, two of us checked in "on-time" the other three bikes were about 1-2 minutes "late". We went to customer services who told us to F-Off because we were "late" (still at least 27 of their required 30 minutes before crossing) even tried getting the other bikes through, but they got pulled over and span around. Most annoying was there was room for another 5-6 bikes on the train the first two got sent on, and the other bikes got held up by almost two bloody hours.

In summary when it goes well it is very good, but they have no common sense (or are not allowed to use it) when things are not going to plan.....

....but still using them again this year as 75% of the time it works well.

Came back on it yesterday, first time I have seen bikes put on first, got the first carriage to ourselves (8 bikes), made for a much quicker less fumy getaway. Excellent service.

Thanks for the input

Thanks for the input guys. Clearly most of you don't think it is a rip-off, which is fair enough.
I agree that £70 for return and similar is a fair price.
What I was specifically upset about and what seem not to be picked on the post was fact of penalizing travelers for not taking return, which was the main reason for me claiming it is a rip off.
I wanted only one way which was at that point up to £169. When I was playing around with the times and dates, I have found that if I would book a return on the same train, if would be only £40 (one way) and £23 back, altogether £63. Now, Eurotunnel claims that if one makes this type of return booking, it is mandatory to actually use the return. Should one not use the return, they would charge the price to single trip and penalizing you for not using their return service.
So in other words, they have strongly unfavorable pricing for people who want just single trip, which I don't think is fair. As a result, I took a ferry.

I do appreciate, tunnel is faster and more convenient and worth paying extra, however I do not like their approach of boosting the prices on some occasions. £169 vs £40 for ferry is a big difference. How much do I think is crossing by train worth? For me £60-70.

I paid £27 each way a few months back, returned the next day, much later than booked, no bother, no extra to pay. I haven't used the Dover to Calais ferry since the tunnel opened.

I would phone them up and say I had fallen off my bike and are being re-patriated by air, the bike is at the bottom of Lake Como after the tumble down the mountain side and unlikely to be making the return Journey, although they are hopeful the Scuba divers will be able to retrieve my wife who went down with the bike - be interesting to see if they still insist you have to pay the balance :D

a couple of years ago,I missed my booked return trip due to an FD failure, caught a ferry a couple of days later as it was the last weekend of the school holidays and the tunnel was fully booked, never heard anything more from them, I would go one way on a return and not worry about it.

Booked a crossing in August £15 each way, that's got to be cheap..it's so convenient as well
