checking rear brake pads

:) Right then I'm about to go home and hunt through the tip (my flat) to attempt to find my 1200GS owners manual.

I want to check my rear pads; it's something I've never done before and theres a bit of a funny scraping sound emanating. Not too bad though, so better check.

So just in case I can't find my book, if one of the bright sparks of the forum would like to post a linky to a prior thread showing how it's done I'd be most appreciative.

I've had a dig about and can't find one.......

Just changed mine, down to the metal after 1600miles from new:spitfire , I think if you look through the rear wheel at the back of the caliper you'll see the pad has a hole in it, if you can see the disc through the hole your pads are shagged, check your disc for scoring as well, just run a finger nail across it's surface, if it's not smooth but badly ridged then this is shagged as well. Good luck and don't pay BMW prices for parts:mad:

Yeh but you'll need em soon enough:thumb , got some from Louis in the end and the disc cleaned up ok, just need to check all the pedal adjustment in daylight to see if thats the problem, if not the ferkin thing is getting disconnected:augie
 
changed plans.......

set off home with petrol countdown reading 1

petrol countdown hit zero, bike died 5 seconds later.

Assumed "no petrol"

Went to get petrol
got petrol
put petrol in bike
bike wont start
shout, swear, still wont start

bike returned to office garage, Marcus feeling a bit hot & sweaty

BMW assist booked tomorrow AM

ps rear disk shows scoring:o
I'll ask the BMW person to take a gander at that as well and try to scrounge some pads.
 
I would argue that having to replace pads, and possibly the disc if badly scored, after just 1600mls from new is a warranty issue. There will be an exception to certain items under fair wear and tear which would include the pads and discs but 1600 mls is not IMHO 'fair wear and tear'.

As ned stated the pads have wear 'holes' in them that are meant to show the wear rate. In practice they are a total waste of space. Just look closely at the pad locators (holes) where the pads ride on the pin. If you look at the pads right behind the bike from the rear, in good lighting you can see how much meat (or how little!) is left. :mcgun
 
ps Verdict from BMW assist on last nights breakdown:

Fuel pump, water ingress

(that old fave)

apparantly it's happening to ST's as well.


funny he happened to have a loads of new bits in the boot!
