Getting reported on every 1/2hr on bbc world service.

How on earth did such dreadful abuse on a National scale happen? Is sounds like we have had a deaf dumb and blind Garda, Dept. of Education, Church and society in general ?

I have never come across anything of this kind while I was in Marist and Christian Brothers schools. Was a difficult child without any doubt and got clattered but nothing worse than that.

It is really shameful. And it sounds like no-one is being held accountable - maybe this is only step 1.

Monageer report last week, this now. I know they are not the same but they are both very very saddening.

Bin

I really struggle with this to the point of being nauseous. If children can't be safe whilst under the safety of "sanctuary" what in gods name is happening to civilisation that we know of... I really can't get my head around this & am deeply troubled. I know it has happened over the ages but how debased can a person be to take religious vows & then trash the sanctity of humanity... I'm so glad I'm an athiest, else I too would feel the burning guilt...

Bin, you have been in the sun too long.....accountability does not exist in Ireland.

Blood tribunal - all sacked with full pensions etc..People died due to the 'negligence', they knew the blood was contaminated...

The NatIrish bank encouraging off shore accounts - Nowt, Beverly Flynn got elected on the back of it....

McMahon Tribunal - Nowt, Fcuk this was unbelievable, the money squandered on an open and shut case of political corruption

cant remember the others of the top of my head right now, too early......

In France their blood tribunal lead to people going to jail for a long time.

And now it is proved that we as a nation systematically abused the children who needed the most care in our society. It is the lowest a country/Nation can fall and we should be ashamed for allowing it to happen and still allowing the perpetrators away with it. The Catholic Church in Ireland is one of the most evil in History and this proves it. They have not offered any assistance, compensation, nothing but hiding the guilty. It is disgusting. The Christian Brothers has been one of the worst too and i can only presume that we have only seen the tip of the Iceberg and they have closed ranks so we dont see the cesspit that lies behind their closed doors. I am sure there are children buried all over Ireland unaccounted for.....

And people wonder why we are called Paddys' and Micks' :blast

I cannot find the words to express how I feel about it, I am completely at a loss:mad::tears:anger:tosser:banghead::forry

They should round the cnuts up and use them for medical experiments instead of rats and mice.

Very shameful and sad news indeed - the church is there to protect the vulnerable. I remember watching the Magdalen Sisters movie and being completely blown away by the antics but allowed the artisitc licence to dilute the horror, however this shows it to be a true tale. Very sad.

As for hiding the guilty, many years ago I was involved in an investigation of child abuse by a local priest. When his house was searched there thousands of photographs of young semi naked boys, none of which could be deemed pornagraphic. The accused stood smiling knowing nothing incrimminating would be found - why? The mother of one of the victims had reported the abuse to the church, who convened a panel, interviewed the guy, he made admissions and they gave him 7 days to clear up before they would contact the police.....B*st*rds.

I too share the horror and shame for what was done by the Irish state and religious systems to our most vulnerable. Truly appalling.

But what makes me really really mad is the fact that the Irish Government just a few short years ago, in the person of Minister Michael Woods, did a deal with the religious sector, granting them immunity and capping their exposure to compensation to (I think) €200 million - this at a time when it was well known just how bad the situation was. In my mind this is as bad a crime as the individual crimes committed in the institutions because it makes it very difficult or impossible for a lot of the victims to ever get justice. It makes my blood boil.

I don't know who God is, but I'll say a prayer for those unfortunate children, adults now struggling to lead normal lives and not getting the support and help they so desperately need.

Better stop now before I burst a blood vessel.

€127 million I believe. The cost to the state was estimated at around €1bn if memory serves.

There was a culture there that sheltered & protected the abusers, the dying echoes of which can still be heard today. Systemic child abuse was the worst of the many horrors inflicted by that culture, but by no means the only one. Anne Lovett probably knew that as she lay dying in a Granard churchyard on a cold January afternoon in 1984.

:aidan

In my humble opinion, the powers to be, ie Government and Church turned a blind eye to the horrors that were going on and looked the other way.

It hasn't gone away and if something serious isn't done about rehabilitation and prosecuting the perpetrators it will continue...

I'm struggling with this, I really am. It's also amazing to realise that the "Magdalen Sisters" places were open until not that long ago really. And this in a supposidly civilised western 1st world country.

Are there issues with this general sort of thing in other Catholic countries, Italy, France, South America (let's not add the USA for the moment), or is it a problem peculiar to Ireland? :nenau

Whenever catholic friends have seen this sort of thing in the news and commented that catholics aren't like that, I ask them how it could happen then, and they have no answer.

It's almost as if the "church" (in any large organised shape or form) seems to have an unhealthy hold over people and wield huge power and influence, much like medieval times. And unfortunately that's not isolated to Ireland.............

Unfortunately these people were held in such a high esteem by some of our elders that no child would have been believed. Its a disgrace that they walk away.
There are old men being held accountable (and rightly so) in EU for Crimes Against Humanity some of which happened long before this. Why then do our weak feeable government let them walk away. It sickens me to the pit of my stomach.
We marched in the streets for the OAP's medical cards, maybe we should take to the streets again for the children

No better than the Nazis a nation that could not cherrish and care for vunerable children.
All goverment and offical bodies were shit scared of the church and probably still are.
I would bankrupt the church and launch a criminal investigation all the way to the Vatican. I was listening to some of the victims on Joe Duffy yesteday.

I would bankrupt the church and launch a criminal investigation all the way to the Vatican..

I would donate to that. That is about the best thing that could happen to the catholic church as it has been about conning people into believing its lies all to line its own pockets...

But it isn't going to happen. No one in the 4 major political parties has balls except mary harney and she's not meant to have them..

I went to Catholic schools and received the usual beatings etc. Indeed if one b*****d was still alive I'd really be round at his house looking for a chat.
However, there are loads on the band wagon complaining and doing nothing constructive about changing the church.
I was at mass today and the priest sat out in the pews whilst the alter servers changed...so things are changing.
